Question Short Shift Kit ?

I'm close to finishing my 81 SC refurbishment (your never really done). I posted some questions several weeks ago and got great answers. Most of which solved my problems. One answer resulted in my ordering new shift bushings and a gallon of Swepco. In my planning for this project I took several pictures which I have posted.

Can you tell from these pictures if this is a short shift kit?

There is a gob of weld material on the rear of the shift lever, can you guess what the intent was? Is this a break in the lever?

By the way, there is considerable movement in the cup bushing and I am excited about the results when I get all the bushings replaced! Thans for your responses! Mark [img]

Mark,

Try taking the plus signs out of the filenames, and upload again.

Ed T,

Thank you for the link. It has answered my questions. And for sure will after I dismantle the shifter later today.

As for my picture download I'm still unable (had great success before). I suspect a conversation with my ISP is in order. I even tried from other computers and to no avail.

Thanks again for the post.
Mark

I can't really tell from your pictures. Note from the picture in the other thread I put the link to above that the main difference is the length from the pivot point to the ball at the bottom of the shift rod. If you take it apart it should be pretty easy to tell. Instructions on taking out the shifter assebly can be found here:

or here:

After removing my shifter I was able to measure and confirmed that the distance from the pivot center to the ball center was 43 mm. This confirms it as a standard factory shifter. I took some pics but none were to definitive. Slag from the weld dripped onto the ball bushing and distorted it some and there was a crack as well. Tomorrow I will clean, install new bushings and change to Swepco. After adjusting the linkage I hope to see some improvement.

Thanks,
Mark

Looks to me that the factory epoxy joint failed and someone did an in-car repair with their welder.

Get a WEVO from our host. I have one in my 79SC. Shifts like greased butter. Did mine in about 2 hours.

At a minimum you need a new ball cup and zero clearance guide.

I had both of these custom made, but I think that there is a 914 part that does as well.
