3.2 in a 72
Anyone ever done this conversion?
My hunt for a 3.0 engine as lead me to a 3.2 engine with full injection system from a 76k car. Iim wanting to know how much more involved this conversion would be compared to a 3.0 cis? can I still use the 915 box? are the engine mounts the same? Does the brain control the ingnition or does it have a seperate ignition modual? Any advice would be much apreciated. Steve |

There are quite a few of that conversion running around. The only extra complexity over a 3 liter swap is in the extra electical work to get the DME up and running. Shouldn't be a real big deal.
3 liter SC or 3.2 liter Carrera both need to have the voltage regulator setup switched to the later internal type, both use the same motor and transmission mounts, either can use the stock 915(the 3.2 will want a notch made in the bellhousing for the reference sensor), both will want a good oil cooler setup, both will want the oil tank deepened or at least baffled. The DME controls both fuel and ignition, stock it is under the drivers seat and connected to the engine through a harness, be sure to get the engine harness and DME all from the same car. You can mount it anywhere that it is ventilated and dry(Most stick w/ the stock location or the rear seat area)

This engine comes with the harness but the brain has been sold, can I locate this from another car easily enough? the other option I considered is megasquirt MSnS which will also controll spark!

Also what needs doing to the oil tank and Y? I would like to keep my oil tank if at all possible as its a 1972 and the only year that had the external filler. Is it an issue of oil volume?

I have a 72 with a 3.2 engine, it's a great combination. The engine fits the 915 very easily, I had to grind off a small area of the housing 1/4 inch, one small spot. The electrical is the tricky part, I'll forward an electrical chart that comparing the two electrical systems that I found after I installed my engine. I put a front cooler in mine as it's a RS clone, not sure if you have too, but several knowledgeable board members recommended additional cooling. It never hits more than 175 degrees. The car is an absolute blast to drive. Wish you luck and I'll forward the electrical diagram tomorrow, It's in my home computer.

Thanks ben, What did you do about your 72 oil tank did you keep it standard or did you have to mod it?

Jack Olsen did it right on his '72. Try a search or maybe he'll chime in?

I kept the original cooler and added the front cooler. The front cooler requires some metal work to allow proper air flow, but wasn't too tough. The cooler was only a couple hundred bucks, but the oil lines are expensive. It took me a total of maybe 9-10 hours to complete.

Yes, the original tank is modified to allow oil flow to the front or additional oil cooler. If your not going to go with a front cooler, take Bill's suggestion and check out how Jack Olson prepared his 72. Actually, check it out either way, it's a really cool car.

Thanks for the wiring info Ben,
What exactly needs to be done to the oil tank? is it simply so you can attche the front oil cooler or does the volume of the tank need to be increased?

Ok its no going back now the 2.4 is officially out and sold, and im pretty sure 99.9% im going to go for a 3.2 over a 3.0, I have two on offer to me at the minute just need to go inspect them both and make a descision.
Ben do you have a link to the info you mentioned before on how jack did his 72-3.2? Steve |

I think im more than definatly going to be running this on a megasquirt n spark ECU. Anyone know of a 3.2 with megasquirt a recommendation would be really good. If this turns out not to be good then both the engines im looking at have the DME for sale luckily.

Try Joe Cogbill at German Auto Dismantlers (North of Atlanta) 866-356-2996 ext. 126. Lots of knowledge and lots of Porsches being parted out. I got my 3.2 there for my 75 Carrera. Wow! I think I got a good one. Tell Joe Donny Blackburn (Prescott, AZ) recommended him. I got a complete set up with all dme , tach and other things like fuel lines, filters, motoronic and the works for $7K.

BTW - be careful with those little mutha pins... but do take this as an opportunity to clean it all up
and - you'll need to change some sensors -- I did on my '86 in a '73.5 project, so it's certain in a'72
