Replacing the targa front bar seal
It appears that the front bar seal on my '79 Targa has shrunk. I assume this is what's happened, as on both sides of the car, the seal doesn't reach far enough down to fully protect from rain etc. There is, in fact, a substantial "hole" where the seal should meet up with the door, but doesn't quite get there. I have priced the seal and am prepared to shell out the cash, but I need to know whether this is a DIY project or not. I prefer to do as much work on this car myself as possible, but I've read some stories on replacing various seals that suggest that it's a real pain in the a$$. Could someone please share with me your experience with this type of maintenance? How much time should I allot for the project? Are there any special tools needed? Can I screw anything up by trying to do this myself? Any advice is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I replaced miine years ago and if I recall it wasn't all that difficult. I have heard that the seals do not match original. Do a search. Something about having to trim the new one down to get it match up with the roof.

There is an additional seal that mounts directly on top of the door window that plugs this gap.I have yet to do this job although I have bought all the bits,I shall be just as interested as you in any answers.

Actually, I'm also having a little leakage issue with this area too. Let's see, how to explain this....on both sides of the car, there is a small opening at the top corner where the targa top meets the top of the vent window/windshield area. I have to keep some napkins handy so that I can quickly plug the hole when it starts raining. I've been told to use some foam rubber sealant, but haven't yet looked into it. Beginning to think a coupe would have been a better investment......but this is my first 911, so I guess you live and learn.

Frank, It sounds like your vent windows are simply lower than the top as they were on lime. I reaised the drivers side vent window. You have to take the rood panel off to access the 3 or 4 bolts but its not difficult to do. Top still leaks but its in the shop for engine rebuild. When I get it back next week that's the first thing I intend to fix.
