Change Ventilation System?
Where is the fresh air blower on non-A/C cars?
Is there a way to get that blower and replace my A/C air blower to free up the smuggler's box? I'd just pull it out, but I like being able to at least get some air moving with the vents, even if it's not cold.

So the non-AC cars just blow air by magic then?

My 73E has a ventilation system that is more akin to a dead mans last breath....
Oh sure it heats....but "fresh"? Uh not especially. It is an area I would like to see improvement. (And yes, my blower fan IS running...at three speeds: Limping, crawling and drunk slithering.)

Is it possible enough to reroute the blower hoses to there, or am I looking at a really crazy job?
Assuming I can find the blower motor that goes under there.

Mine blows a ton of air, not really cool air since all of the other A/C components are gone, but it takes up a nice chunk of space that seems like it could be put to better use.
But if it's going to go from this to a dying breath, that may not be worth it.

If you have already removed some of your a/c components you must have left the a/c evaporator box. It is located in the smugglers box and also houses the fan for the a/c. You could remove it but it does help move some air around when it's hot in the car.

Rob,
All of the cars, including yours, have essentially the same fresh air blower, located under the cover at the rear of the trunk. The differences between the cars with A/C and the cars without are in the ducting and distibution pieces. I have deleted the A/C compnents from one of my cars and changed the ducting to what would have been present on a non-A/C car. You get more flow from the forward speed of the vehicle than you do from the fan. In hot weather, rolling down a window is essentially the only option. In cold weather, the fan is enough but it is noisy. The next time you drive your car, place all of the black-tipped levers on your ventilation controls all the way to the right and take note of how much air you get out of the vent on the top of the dash. It won't be much. |

every other crazy job on modifying these cars has already been done - so you could be a pioneer...

I am deep in thought experiments on how to utilize the center vent on the dash for fresh air now the AC is gone. I am thinking of running a hose from where the front evaporator used to be to the vent but have not figured out how to open/close it yet. I have placed T-sections coming from the right side of the fresh air blower to the center vent in my last car but I only got heated air. More thought needed.

Makaio did a nice vent mod to the AC vent.

Hmmm...what about taking the A/C assembly, removing all the evaporator crap (just leave a fan and motor assembly, and use the existing exhaust to the centre vent. Might also be interesting to suck the air for this unit from the cowl vent (tap into the back of that assembly) to get fresh air from outside. Not sure where the ducting could go for that part though.....

Gary; This is easy to do. You just add a y-shaped plastic piece (911 571 039 00) to the right hand output from the fresh air blower housing and then shorten the hose to the right side air distibution assembly and connect a second hose from the additional outlet on the "Y" to the duct in the center of the dash. The left hand outlet from the blower housing goes to the left side air distribution assembly. Each air distribution box has two inlets; one for fresh air and one for heated air, and two outlets; one for the footwell area and the other for the side vents and windshield outlets. If everything is adjusted properly, you should not be able to get heated air out of the dash center vents. You should end up with nothing going to the smuggler's box. See diagram 813-00 in the PET software if you have a copy. It will make it all pretty clear. |

Groovy. I thought I had followed Makaio's tech on this previously but I hooked up my "Y" to the left side of the blower box, not the right. I'll give it a shot.
