How long does it take to remove a broken cylinder / head stud?

This was a steel one in my case, but just not enough of it sticking out to get a good bead on the nut, and not enough to grab with vise-grips.

Can the studs be replaced with motor in car or does it have to be pulled? Yes, I'm a newbie.
