First time valves on an '88 3.2:
I think I'm at TDC - dizzy at 3 o'clock and double hash marks on the pulley? I can't see any "Z1" - maybe it's blocked by the AC pulley? So why do I have clearance on the #6 valve now? I'd adjusted #1, then did the 120 deg move went over and found #4 loose and #6 tight. Now I'm confused and insecure ![]() Help ![]() Stef |

the dizzy should be pointing to whatever the #1 wire was connected to
it is possible, to put a dizzy in so that #1 points to another angle than it should... maybe the PO did this at TDC for a cylinder, both intake and exhaust valve should be closed that's the only way to be sure with both valve covers off, it's viewable rotate the crank and watch the intake open on #1 right after that , it will close both valves should be closed now and the mark should line up on the crankshaft pulley voila , TDC for #1

at the point where #1 is at TDC, #4 should would have just closed it's exhaust valve , and should be getting ready to open it's intake valve

Stef,
I just looked at my '85. Maybe not exactly the same. With number one at TDC, the rotor is pointing about 3 o'clock as you described. There is no Z1 mark. What there is is one mark for TDC and another mark just over one inch to the right. The mark to the right would represent 35 degrees advance for spark timing. At this point (number one TDC) the intake valve for number six would be closed as number six piston is rising with both valves closed for it's compression stroke. Remember 1-6-2-4-3-5. Remember to rotate the crank clockwise. If you rotate the crank counter clock wise you will get what you are seeing. If you are confused, rotate the engine back to number one TDC. Both intake and exhaust will be loose (.004"). Then rotate to the next mark 120 degrees, Clockwise. Number six intake and exhaust will be loose. The distributor rotor will be pointing about 5 o'clock, thats number 6 TDC. AT the next 120 mark the distributor will be pointing about 7 o'clock for number 2. 9 o'clock for number 4, 11 o'clock for number 3, 1 o'clock for number 5, then back to 3 o'clock for number 1. 1-6-2-4-3-5. Remember two (2), Crank turns for one distributor turn. TDC for number 4 looks just like TDC for number one, except the rotor is pointing about 9 o'clock. Take a deep breath, think about this, then go do it. Keep asking questions if you get stuck.

Thanks guys!
Doug, yep looks exactly like yours. I had it, but the sanity check sure helped. Went through all the checks, until I had my mind wrapped around it and went and adjusted them. Tomorrow I'll double check. Really no big deal, but it sure is tedious! ![]() Hopefully I'll get it buttoned back up tomorrow (doing some other stuff too) so I can go for a spin! Stef |
