Awesome rides on this thread! :):)
Update our 3.6 Conversion going on 12+ years with many track events and street miles just freshened it for the second time, new bearings and springs.
Had to replace the original fuel harness, evidently the factory low voltage wires that go to the injectors was a factory recall item.
Check your stock 3.6 fuel harness for brittle or broken wire insulation.

Rowing the 3.6.

How much did the ITB upgrade run you? Have you done a before and after Dyno or did you just rely on your seat of the pants impression?

Built the motor with ITBs before it went in the car it, so no before and after, but it scoots. Previously I had an SC that I swapped from CIS to ITBs and it was a noticeable difference. No dyno runs with the CIS, but with the ITBs, it put down 200hp/189tq at the wheels and was internally stock, so they certainly make a difference, but to unlock the full potential, you're going down the rabbit hole of pistons and cams at the very least.

For those with a 964 conversion, can someone please tell me of your coil packs hook up to both distributors on the motor? Apparently o only have one wire hooked up and there isn’t an attachment from the distributor to the second coil pack. Thanks.

Factory Level Fuel Lines for 3.6 Conversions

:)

For those of you also considering a 3.6 swap, here is a FYI-

Many of these conversions are using aftermarket Lines & Hoses of the AN type.

Unknown to many, some of these AN type Hoses are actually made in China. The best way to tell is to peel back the SS Braid. The mfg info MUST be printed on the hose. If not there, this is an inferior Chinese product.

I thought I would show what can be done using Porsche approved German E-85 Rated Metric Hose & Fittings.....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1655988625.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1655988717.JPG

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1655989792.jpg

This is the best E-85 Rated Hose available, and with a SS braid, and yes, made in Germany.

And when a custom fitting is needed and we cannot buy them from Germany, we have them machined locally.....

Just a heads up, I see that you are using the 993-engine mount cross bar, console and tin. This requires a 3/4 spacer which will drop the rear of the engine and lead to issues w/ exhaust appearance and ground clearance.

I'd highly recommend using a 3.3 console, regular 911 or RSR type 911 cross bar and Sheriden 3.6 conversion f/g to replace the tin. You do need to use a single or double sheave crank pully as well.

W/ the 3.2 parrts the engine and exhaust sit exactly as in any other 911.

Thank you for the guidance Bill. I was aware I'd have to lower the engine by about 25mm. I purchased the PMS 3.6 conversion to early 911 tin, that is what we installed yesterday. That won't work?

I have a spare RSR crossmember sitting in my garage and we have the single pulley conversion waiting installation once we get the front and aft pulley adapter. Timmons told me the RSR crossmember wouldn't work when I ordered the kit from him.

Do you think this exhaust will have clearance issues?

https://werksperformance.com/products/copy-of-porsche-993-carrera-rsr-header-muffler-kit-with-heat-dual-inlet-outlet-muffler-copy-of-993-rsrwh

I'm also starting to have concerns regarding the 915 being able to handle 285-300 rwhp despite us fixing any issues with the transmission. I'm not going to hammer on it, but with and OS Giken LSD and rebuilt 915 it should be fine for several years without service...? What are your thoughts Bill?

arrivederci 07-19-2025 03:06 PM

On the subject of engine mounts, notice that the one in Bill's picture is reinforced at the ends. This is a great idea...those things twist quite a bit.

For transmission durability, I guess it depends how you treat it. I too heard people cautioning me about the 915 but I haven't had an issue nor do I know anyone with a 3.6L that has grenaded their 915. I did go with an '84 euro 915 (not my stock magnesium cased one) and I didn't add an LSD hoping to stress the transmission a little less, maybe having a little wheelspin here or there on one wheel. 911s get such great traction anyhow and I don't track this car, so the lack of LSD is hardly noticeable.

The 993 console, crossbar and modified tin work but force the rear of the engine down over 1 1/4" due to the height of the tin

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752966489.JPG
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752966489.JPG

the 3.2 parts w/ Sheriden f/g tin replacement fits like a glove and returns the engine to it's usual position

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752966626.JPG
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752966626.JPG

That exhaust looks exactly like the one I bought from Fabspeed, and I do mean exactly. If so it's great, best I've ever heard including the ones I've used on my 993.

Only nit is that the tips are a little weal, appearance wise

AlBackus36 07-22-2025 05:41 AM

Bill,

I have a timmons'/IG style 3.6VR swap in an '87. It is freaking tight on the top.

Have you fit a 3.6 varioram with the 3.3 console, 3.2 bar, and sheridan tin? I'm not actually sure the engine could go up another inch with the ICV already pressed against the insulation.

I know you're familiar and will echo that if you do nothing, your exhaust will be lower than normal. I scrape when driving hard and have a passenger in the car. I'm pretty low though.

Another observation: There is some slight angularity at the transmission mount, but it's in the opposite direction you'd expect. It is tilted with the forward end down, indicating the engine is actually higher than the trans... I'll see if I can snap a pictures of this. Maybe my memory is off because this would be unusual.

I'm fascinated by this swap now. It feels like it's not quite fully understood.

https://imgur.com/a/sS7lGTN

PS: Not sure if photo is working as imgur is blocked at work. The little spouts are header dumps. One is unfortunately aimed a little downward.

chucksmith 07-22-2025 06:15 AM

this is how my exhaust sits with my Timmons VRAM set up . It is tucked in nicely, it is a tight fit at the top of the VRAM intake though.

Thanks for the extra pics, Chuck.

I want to clarify the car is more than drivable. Ryan, don't think it won't be usable. I drive the car hard and it doesn't get in the way. If I have someone in shotgun I have to be extra careful over speed bumps or driveways. That's mostly it.

Awesome. The exhaust I posted was actually old - It is the Fabspeed RSR. The owner apologized and gave me $1,000 off. Still a pricey piece of kit but sounds amazing from the clips I've heard.

Good, I just didn't want to spook you away from your current path. There are hundreds of cars out there that have been done with the 3.6 console, etc.

I'm convinced the Varioram guys can't go higher, but would love to be proved wrong so I can raise my exhaust :)

You'll either need to make room at the top or fab custom I/O pipes at the bottom

Take your pick

First wont you need to hit the lottery? I know a Rothsport 3.6 that makes 100HP/liter is at least $40k....plus your running engine. Byron's engine....double that for normal people? I'm out. LOL

Any color is fine as long as it’s black/black. :D

Good to see so many fellow nutjobs who have spent a lifetime and small (sometimes not so small) fortune putting together their own personal versions of pure 3.6L German automotive bliss. Has been a fun and sometimes challenging 12 years for me. But this one is finally a masterpiece IMHO. Is the finished product everything I’d hoped it would be…yes. Would I do it again….no. My advice to anyone about to start down this path: if you’re not a mechanic and will be outsourcing the work, just buy a completed project and pay the premium for a properly sorted example.
