3.2 had a rebuild, what oil to run in with?

Hi All

My 3.2 is having it's top end re-fresh being finished off in the next few days so new rings, valves, guides, seals, bearings etc etc; my question is what oil for the running in period?

Some have suggested cheap old Dino (eg Castrol GTX) for the first few 500miles or so and not to use synthetic blends (eg Castrol Magnatech, what I normally use) as these oils don't allow the rings to bed in properly.

Cheers in advance
James

Yup, good advice!

When I had my 3.2 rebuilt to turbo specs, I ran normal Dino oil for the first 600 miles or so and never drove under heavy load during that period.

Flush out the oil, replace oil filer and check for/clean metal deposits on the magnetic oil drain bolt. Fill up with Synthetic and away you go

Yes, athough I would run dino oil for about 5K miles, with oil changes at 500, and 2000 miles. I think it takes more than 500 miles for a proper break in.

I agree. Use the cheap stuff for the first couple of oil changes if for no other reason as a cheap fluid to flush the assembly lube/burrs out of the system. Change the oil at 1000 miles, then again at 5000 and you'll be good to go back to sysnthetics.
