What Year did original IMSA start?

Hey Guys,
I was trying to figure out the year that the old original IMSA was first run?
I know at least they were running in the real early 70's.
The first race I went to was in 73 at Road Atlanta.
I thinK 73!

It died in the mid 90s. There were a couple different owners near the end.
Then in 99 Don Panoz revived it as it is today as the IMSA - ALMS series.
