What will a strong 3.2 cost me?

I have an early 911T that I needs it's motor rebuilt. I was considering just replacing the 2.2 with a 3.2, but can't find any in the classifieds.

What can I expect to pay for a very strong 3.2 or for a 3.2 in need of a rebuild? And can anyone point me to a good source?

I bought this motor a while back. 3.2 Engine, brain, harness from 75k 89 Carrera

If I remember right, I paid $7200 for it including the MAF, muffler, new centerforce clutch and KEP pressure plate. Plus $400 shipping I think.

I sold my 210K 3.2L that was still in decent shape but getting tired for $3800.

At the time, I wasn't really looking for a motor but good 3.2s don't show up often. Good luck with the search.

You can find them in the Pano classifieds from time to time in the $6-7K range. But if you pay a shop to install it, the labor can run that much again. If you have one rebuilt, count on $10K at least. Not an avenue for the faint of heart. Obviously you can save considerably by doing everything yourself.

I bought my 1980 SC with a 3.2 already in it (someone did the conversion) . The whole car only cost $8700.00. It's not easy to the conversion. Check out this Pelican link :

To me I think the 3.2 would be a great upgrade and would actually add to the market value if done correctly.

The best deal (if you were lucky enough like don911's find) is this route. Documented history, low mileage plug in and go.

Bottom line is these cars are very expensive to play with.

You may want to contact the following for 3.2 availability:

Also, here is a link to a 3.2 on ebay. Search on item:

I would argue that the 'conversion' is actually pretty straight forward. that link pretty much shows what you need to do with the minor exception of any wiring changes required for your year. You mighht also want to consider additional oil cooling.

having done a 3.2 in to a 78 and a 3.6 into an 88. I'm sold on the bang for the buck and simplicity of the install of the 3.2.

my 'someday project car' will be a galvanized narrow car with a 3.2 semi backdated to some weird R look Rally style bastardization.

A stock 2.2 engine is extremely desirable and valuable in an early 911. A transplanted 3.2 is not. So while a 3.2 will increase performance, it will hurt the resale value dramatically.

All 3.2 engines are now old enough that if not freshly rebuilt with documents andsome warranty, then a rebuild should be priced in.
Cost of a rebuild?? Top end, you doing all the labor, NO upgrades, just factory / PP parts, should be $3500 to $6500 depending on the need for Pistons & Cylinders vs just Pistons, or just piston rings.

So, I would pay $2500 - $4000 for a complete with brain, exhaust, clutch 3.2 that needed rebuilding. And around $7500 for a newly rebuilt 60 to 90 day labor 1 year parts warrantied engine.

I agree - but you take the risk that the crank isn't broken... then you are _not_ saving money by getting a used engine...

ditto

rebuild the stock engine
do some early block mods to it while you do
the expense for the mods should be minor during a full rebuild

save the earlies... there's enough 3.x transplants allready

I'm on the other side of the country but for comparison purposes I've got a 1989 3.2L with ~115K that you can hear running that I'm selling for $5500 including harness and DME.

To me unless the early car is a rare model why wouldn't the 3.2 be a logical choice? How could it hurt resale or market value?

Porsche owners don't build and diligently maintain their cars for possible resale value, they do it out of love for the breed and the joy of driving a Porsche!

SCREAMING DEAL!

Anything with documented valve guide work for under $7k is a good deal, IMHO.

I paid $4500 for an '86 with MAF, magnecores, chip, pre-muff, DME, and harness. Its got 130K on it and will probably need top end work soon but showed 5% leakage across all cylinders and dint use excessive oil.

A buddy of mine has a 3.2 EFI street/race motor punched out to 3.4 that needs to go. He won't advertize it due to rude e-mails from trolls who don't believe it dynoed 292HP. I can take the heat.
PM me if you are serious. It is still in the car and you can take a ride. You cannot drive. PPI at a mechanic of your choice on your dime.
~17K on build-up. Driven daily. He has a 3.6 ready to drop in. $7000 firm.
