What glue do you use for inside rearview mirror?

The mirror on my 76 is mounted way too high. I can't move the sun visors without hitting the it. What is the best way to remove it and what glue do you use to put it back on?

Can't help you with removal, but you can get rearview mirror glue at any auto parts store for ~$3.

The OEM '76 911 mirror mounts are designed to be attached with an adhesive pad (likely die cut from double-sided adhesive foam tape or sheet). The lack of a separate mounting button and the fact that the mirror attachment foot has a formed recess for the adhesive pad makes using the standard cyanoacrylate adhesive from the auto parts store problematic. The correct part number for the adhesive pad from Pelican is A-731-133-20; cost is $3.50 or possibly make one out of foam mounting tape. Remove the mirror by carefully slipping a razor blade under the foot and cutting the existing adhesive pad.

If you find a dealer with these adhesive pads in stock, by 2 or 3.
They are harder to get than they should be, my local parts manager told me he can't get them currently from Porsche though that may change. They've had to buy them from other sources, so, just use Pelican as long as they have them. It's a 3M adhesive so as Jim says, you can probably find the same material in other places if you can't find the correct part.

While my local dealer does not stock the adhesive pads, the guy at Speedy auto glass (a Porsche freak with connections) made a phone call and had one in a couple of hours.
He said they're hard to find. Grab a couple of spares.

Ordered one through Pelican this past June and it was shipped right away; perhaps just dumb luck.

most sticky pads don't stick for long. i use JB qwik-weld. trowel on a thin layer with a razor blade and duct tape only the mirror base plate in place until the JB is pretty firm, then use a razor blade to trim off the JB out-squeeze around the pad before it sets up too much. be sure to put a spot of tape over the threaded screw hole before applying the JB, or you won't get the mirror screw all the way back in.

I broke my windshied trying to remove a mirror that had been attached with glue. Note that the base of the mirror is quite large. It is sized for the adhesive pad, and oversized for the kind glue intended for many mirrors (with little tiny bases).

The best way to remove the mirror is to use a hair dryer to heat the adhesive pad through the front windshield. Just be careful not to get the windshield too hot and to have something soft to catch the mirror when it comes loose.
