Don,

As you tear into the front, let us know how much work would be required to convert to an IROC bumper/spoiler treatment. I'm guessing rear would be easier also. I'm thinking of going that route on a C4 some day. Thanks.

Cool car! Good luck and I like your innovative approach!
Will you be adding lumpier cams to the engine, too, a la RS / RSR themes of the past?

Thanks!
I haven't decided on what seats yet. The steering wheel will be replaced. We'll be taken out the rear seats. But we won't be putting anything back. Were also putting in a roll bar.
We won't be taking out the insulation.

I haven't decided on the engine stuff either.
But, I do know it will have a chip, Headers w/heat & Supertraps and a K&N type intake filter system. I have tough about putting in 993 cams a bit.

2600 is about it man! That black 964 that pictured is 2600 and its mostly fiberglass and is totally gutted.

Thanks man! The blue dose look great! But that red really jumps out at ya.
That green one looks better than I would have thought.

We started in on that today a bit. I will be taking pics. I keep yawl updated. It is gona be a lot more work than the rear.

Porsche Doc 10-25-2005 04:17 PM

We have now started on the front of the car.
Here is a few pictures that Jim Pasha took today.
The front has a lot more work involved.
In fact we may change the front fenders and start with the early ones.

Don,
Great work, but lots of it! My car had something similar done in metal (done by Axiom):

I'm sure there are plenty of ways to skin the cat! Hope this isn't taking away from your excellent thread. My car is an early car which was updated in the eighties and then I had it backdated.
It is going to be awesome, when you are done! Great project!

Is that a FG hood? TRE also makes or sells the longhood which latches to the shorthood bulkhead, which is a cool product for back-dating. Are you using that?

Hey Man,
That looks great !
In no way are you taking away from the thread!!
YOU just added to it. THANKS!

I didn't know Dave had such a hood.
It just goes to show (You learn something new every day).
I am using a steel hood.

Ha! Man you can get in on up date and back date threads.

Were working on it abit already.
The rear uses about the same type offset as a 930 turbo.
The fronts the rim will be about the depth half way between a 7 and 8. It ought to look OK!

DW SD 11-10-2005 09:58 PM

Doc,
Any updates on the project?

Doug

DCobra 11-11-2005 02:54 PM

Don,
Great looking car as always! I have got to make a road trip to your shop some day. What color white are you using for your cars? I am planning on painting mine up this winter. It is white with black graphics. I just can't decide which shade of white.

Dave

Pele911 11-11-2005 03:31 PM

That is gonna be bad A$$. I almost bought a C4 that was turbo charged by a local shop. Incredible handeling characteristics but I wanted a long nose.

My question is How about stepping away from the overdone white/red? I know the history behind the porshce white prototypes and the historic value is cool for replicas but this aint a replica. Its gonna be a one of a kind. Justa thought.

They Man,
From what we have found it would be fairly easy to put a IROC bumper on a C2 or C4.

Porsche Doc 11-11-2005 07:37 PM

New Up Date stuff.

Well we have abandon the idea of making the C4 front fenders work.
We have gone to a set of early set of fenders that we took off a 73 car were turning into a RSR. Now were putting the flares on them and doing the fab work on them were the the lights are to match the flare.
I think it is really cool that the early fender fit the C4. The bolts line right up.
We have cut off the rear flares and pressure washed the whole car. It is really going along quite nicely!
In the front we have had to angle in the oil cooler and AC condencer a little. But so far so good.
In the last pic it shows rust that all C2s & C4s are gona have.
This was a Texas car and the water gets in at the conjunction of the hood seal and the cowl seal and seeps down and starts to rust.
Here is some pics!

Crap! I didn't put in the rust pics here they are!
Both sides were like this! So it's happing to all of them.

Yea! I was kinda surprised too. Especality because the fenders are so well sealed from the bottom with that rubber sealer.
These fenders are a real pain in the butt to get off. You have to cut all the sealer loose before you can even think about taking it off. Dan the guy that took these off said (Hell man they don't need any bolts). There on there!

Jim Pasha was in the other day taking pictures of the rust area.
So look for the rust warning in his TECH section in Excellence soon.

This is not necessarily happening with all of them just a lot of them. :) Of the 964s I've seen with this problem they have all had the front trunk seal replaced incorrectly and the install shop never bothers to prime or paint the area after ripping out the original seal. The rust then migrates everywhere...

Porsche Doc 11-12-2005 07:34 PM

Just a note here!
This cars trunk and cowl seals were the original factory installed ones.
This car has not been damaged or repaired eather.
So! I think you guys best be watch-en!

I am sooo going to do this conversion one day!

Shuie 11-13-2005 03:32 AM

yep, I could live with those wheels. This is helping to convince me to sell my car and buy a 964. If I ever really regret the move I can always go back. Anybody done an IROC backdate on one of these?

efhughes3 11-13-2005 11:43 AM

Shuie: I'm with you. Although I'm leaning toward the 964 RS style, stripped, cage, etc. A lot of fun for prices that are getting better every year.

Porsche Doc 11-14-2005 08:58 AM

Hey stv951,
I don't think that chassis is a 964 one.
It looks like a earlyer one.
Perhaps a turbo one by the looks of the offsets of the wheels.
The area down at the rockers isn't right for a 964.
The lower section under the body is deeper on the 964 body.
Notice that the jack point recever is there.
On a 964 there is no recever for the jack.
The jack pads that are on a 964 aren't there eather.
Unless they installed the jack point and removed the jack pads.
On the pic of the front end the spoiler covers the front of the chassis.
We have found the that the RSR bumper/spoilerwill not cover the whole front end. Its about 2" short.
I will have to install the added lower spliter to cover it.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131990938.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131990970.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131991029.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131991127.jpg

stv951 11-14-2005 10:19 AM

Thats a very good eye Don. I've found these on the net, and I remember it said it was based on a 964 RS, but from what you state you know better ;-)
Is the front chassis on a 964 deeper than the 911s ?

This is a great site with lots of information.

Where can you get the lower splitter?

Series900 11-14-2005 08:33 PM

Lookin good Doc, maybe you need a backdate glass hood !
msailer: and that lower splitter,we make those too... A pic of my 93 RSA, the brumos RS 20th anniversary edition, they backdated with a 74 vintage ducktail and a dash plaque from some Hurley Hooligan guy , I considered adding one of my hoods, thought better of the low build numbers. probably my last track day this year, it was a warm fall day...yummy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132032424.jpg

Still waiting for the right C4 to build this backdate winter beater with a getty kit i have tucked away... I see ski racks, 91mph on rtr91 in february, blinding snow with jay peak the destination!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1132032605.jpg

Geronimo '74 11-15-2005 06:44 AM

This is actually a 2.8 RSR replica, based on a 2.7 from 1977, with a 3.8 320 HP engine, 964 RS tranny, 950 kg in total, RSR brakes, sold by mcg-propulsion for 55000 euro (In France). If your interested www.mcg-propulsion.com

Funny thing is, it's been on sale for a while and they cannot get it sold...

Geronimo '74 11-15-2005 06:51 AM

Two guys standing next to it are the guys that made it, they started the whole business, only in their early 20s

UP Date!
Well MadJack has the rear turbo flares on and in primer.
He welded them on and then used a metal type filler.
It's the new hot ticket stuff now days. After he did the base filler he used a little regulator filler but just a little.
I got the flares from Bill at Restoration Design and they fit great. He is a very nice guy too!
Jack cleaned it real well and then he shot it with the etching primer.
Then after it dried he shot on a build up primer that will be mostly sanded back off.
He got out a can of flat black paint and sprayed it a little.
This is called a guide coat. When it sanded and all the black is gone the panel is all flat and ready for paint. The guide coat shows you when you have all the low and high places out of the panel.
Dan has the front fenders under way. He has the fender wells cut out and ready to weld on the flare.
It is all going along very nicely. Stay tooned! :D
Here is some pics of the rears.

Slightly OT

I too have wanted to build a 959 rally replica out of a C4. Not sure how much it would cost. Probably too much for my serious consideration. I would like to see someone do it.

Have you figured out which wheels this soon to be beauty will be running. Custom fuchs perhaps? I'm interested in seeing how the final project comes out.

Hey JZ,
I will be putting a set of the Lindsay Racings wheels on it.
Mike and I were discussing them yesterday.
The fronts will be 9.5 x17 and 11x17 on the rear.
The tire sizes are gona be 255-40 in front and 315-35 rear
I now have the back spacing figured out it will be 6"
I still have to figure out the fronts.
I have to Waite on the front fenders getting done so I can get some numbers.

Don, that is nice work on that rear flare. One thing I don't have for this kind of work is the patience to perfect it. Out of curiosity, how much time was involved in doing that one rear flare?

Bodywork is deafly not for an impatient person.
Thats why I don't do it. ;)
Its not that I am impatient I just don't that much patience. :D
That fender to this point takes about 8-10 hrs to do it right.
But you have to match up the whole rear end before you can start to attach the fender.
