Update C4 RSR Project

Well we have been doing a little more work on the C4RSR project.
In between the other projects that were doing.
We have it striped of all the bumpers, side skirts, lights and engine lid.
There now being recycled by dsfnctn and jester911 on there projects. Thanks Guys!
We had to cut off the mounts for the heat shield.
We had to cut out the tail light bucket to make them into the 911 configuration. The 964 lites tilt out at the bottom, so we had to trim to straiten them up. Once we got that done we could start to get the rear bumper fitted. Once we got that done we were able
to see how well the steel flares fit. We got a nice surprise the rear fenders. They lined right up with the rear bumper. It Petty wild that they are that similar for cars 21 years apart in age.
Now we will cut off the stock finders and weld on the turbo flairs.
We will go to the front next. It won't be as easy as the rear.
Here is some pics of the rough cuts and fit up.

Don,

Thanks for the update. I think you will have a lot of people watching this thread closely.

jester911 10-20-2005 05:01 PM

Looking good Don. Keep us posted:D

JonT 10-20-2005 05:02 PM

Cool project. Keep us up-to-date.

m325ix 10-20-2005 05:06 PM

very interesting!

Porsche Doc 10-20-2005 05:29 PM

I will probably do it with red grafx like the 72 RSR that I finished a few months ago.
With the body being white, I just can't get past the white and red look. I thought about blue real hard though. Black is just to plain IMO.

If I didn't love my "Amazon" I would consider doing that!

Very cool backdate project http://forums.pelicanparts.com/ultim...ons/icon14.gif Was there anything wrong / damaged with the C4 to begin with? Thanks for sharing.

I love this color combination! Why did you decide to use C4 for this project ?

White on Red is so popular, Porsche chose it for the GT3 RS

I vote for blue graphics!!

GaryR 10-20-2005 06:51 PM

If I can find a bashed up C2.......

Porsche Doc 10-20-2005 06:53 PM

It was a good C4 with a few woes but nothing bad. It is a nice strait car. I bought it on EBay paid 13 for it. It was a Texas car.

m325ix
I have built a bunch of RSR's and IROC look cars. I really like doing them. But when I had the 72RSR for sale there were a bunch of guys ask if I could build a Early RSR look car that had AC, Heat and Stereo. Every thing that a RSR wouldn't have.
Then maybe I have been watching to much TV like Boyd, Foose and hot rod stuff on Barrett Jackson from out there on the west coast. So I am building a Rest-O rod but just with a Porsche.
Plus no one has done a C4 back dated like this. I don't think?
Some lucky new owner will have a unique old looking street car with all the Fu Fu and a fun car for the track.
I think it will be a damn cool car when its done.
There was a C2 done in England back in 99. There was a article about it in Excellence. But I did know about it till after I had already started this one.

Elombard
Blue would be my 2nd choice (so Far!) it is not carved it stone yet.
Maybe there is some one out there that can Photoshop it to to blue grafx?

Shuie 10-20-2005 07:02 PM

Nice work!

What is the plan for the wheels?

I will be installing some more Lindsay's 9.5 and 11 x 17's
I am also thinking about having them done the RSR frosted look.

The fronts will have a front offset like a regular 8" or a little less.
The fronts are the challenge on the wheel deal.
The rears will be about an inch deeper than the front.
The wheel offsets are very close to that you would use on a 930 turbo.
The way makes the wheels, they look deeper than they really are.
Optical illusion thing going on there.
Check out the wheels on this 3.8RSR look car we did. Also the the 11" wheel that Mike made me. It looks like it's a lot deeper than it really is.

Shuie 10-20-2005 07:40 PM

They look great on your '72, but can they even be used on a 964 with any dish at all? Did that 3.8 start out as a 964 or a 911?

Porsche Doc 10-20-2005 07:54 PM

87coupe
That don't look bad man! Kinda reminds me of the VOLS!
Go VOLS! huh Shuie :D
Or a 914 LTD creamsicle
Can you do the blue?

Shuie
That is a 92 C2. Those are CCW's and they dish out in the center, and there over a inch thick.
The flat face of the Fuke will even be deeper than those wheels.
I will have to put a 5/16 spacer on the front wheels. So the wheels will clear the calipers
I think it will look OK.

Shuie 10-20-2005 08:03 PM

Yeah. Funny. Go Vols. Please go. Dont ever come back here again :D

okay, I believe you on the wheels. Cant wait to see it finish

Porsche Doc 10-20-2005 08:09 PM

SorrY Man!
I just could'et help it.
I lost all control.

bigrubberjeep 10-20-2005 11:09 PM

This question is for those of you that know.

Why don't more people "WANT" a C4 over a C2? I heard stuff about reliability but isnt there any advantage on a C4 over a C2 that would out weigh any "potential" reliability issues?

Did Porsche just not develop the AWD system well enough to make it fairly reliable?

twin plugged targa 10-21-2005 05:16 AM

I have just heard that the C2 has better handling characteristics and less weight making it more favourable!.
The C4 has too much understeer from what I hear.
I wpuld have thought the only advantage of a 964 c4 over C2 is in wet/icey conditions, and /or trying to lay excessive HP down to the ground.
I looked into doing a supercharged C4 about 4 yrs ago around the time that Excellence article came out, but it seems the turbo route is more widely reccomended.

ErVikingo 10-21-2005 05:31 AM

I had a similar idea for my next project but I came up with a better one. I want an early car (72 perhaps) with no rear wing and a 993 TT engine on it. It must have a really cold A/C and that's it.

Not sure I'll be able to right now though with the race car draining more funds and a new house being designed......

911teo 10-21-2005 05:38 AM

Doc is there a goal for the weight? Are you doing anything to the 3.6? Suspensions?

I love your cars...

Porsche Doc 10-21-2005 06:59 AM

I don't have a real target weight on this one.
Due to it be more of a street daily driver.
But taking off the the bumpers, skirts, engine lid and other stuff removed 200 lbs from it. I wll be adding a rear roll bar, so the weigth will go back up by 50 lbs.

Suspension wise. I have bilstine sport shocks, some H&R sport springs and F&R sway bars. Big Reds for brakes.

I going racing today for the weekend! YEA:cool:

Jeff964 10-21-2005 09:07 AM

what do you guys think? Its a photoshop pic of my C4.

I like it too!

Will you be adding racing buckets and doing an RSR style rear seat / insulation delete, too? More weight savings there, too.

Cool car! Good luck and I like your innovative approach!
Will you be adding lumpier cams to the engine, too, a la RS / RSR themes of the past?

Doug

KobaltBlau 10-21-2005 10:18 AM

I realize this isn't your intention Porsche Doc,

but I would really like to see someone take a US C2 and do serious weight reduction on it while keeping it somewhat streetable, see what the weight looks like. I Think it would be hard to get much under 2600 and still be a good street car. maybe I am all washed up on this (wrong).

efhughes3 10-21-2005 06:20 PM

Jeff, your car looks good. What about an RS fixed wing/tail? I'm really liking the Carrera RS (964 version) look these days.

edesign45 10-21-2005 08:22 PM

photshop blue...

Hey Porsche Doc!
You really turn out some sharp RSR's and yes, it's hard to beat the White/Red color combo. Here is a White/Blue version you requested.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129954913.jpg

dsfnctn 10-21-2005 09:21 PM

I few years ago in excellence there was a guy with a red c4 widebody that used some other front porsche front differentual and was suppposed to be extremely fast, do you guys remember the audi four wheel drive when it first came out driving around other race cars in the marbles in the corner to pass, I can only imagine the forward bit stability would be amazing, Kevin

Johnny B 10-23-2005 04:32 AM

Eric white and green looks great thanks

also C4 is way cooooooool
