Excellent post. Helped considerably. I thought I'd post my results since it was a little different.

When I bought my '74, the headlights were low beam only. I have it down for a lot of maintenance so I decided to tackle this problem. When I got the switch off I noticed the little sliding tab on the right had melted. All three metal strips were fused together in one mass. It's blind luck I had any lights at all.

I cleaned out the melted plastic and took the thick silver post out. Using a sacrificial Lego from my son's toy bin, I made a small post and tacked it on with JB Weld. After some adjustments I tested the operation with my multi-meter. Everything works as it should. The real test will come when I get the car all put back together.

Thanks again for the thread and the pictures, couldn't have done this without them. Saved me some coin.

The white thing is the piece of Lego.

Are Lego pieces the new Duct tape? Nice McGyver. I love those.

OK, I have to ask - how'd you fix this in 5 minutes? Did you already have the steering wheel off?

Thanks,
Mike

Ok, mine are fixed too. I did not take the steering wheel of. I took out the little screws on either side of the deco plastic at the base of the column and was able to pry it apart just enough to get a small flat blade screw driver in there and separate the contacts.

Thanks!

Dave

That's what I wanted to hear!! I'm glad you were able to do it without removing the wheel. I'll certainly have to try it! I'll save money, as I won't be as pressured to buy a steering wheel too...

I finally got around to doing this as well. I didn't remove the steering wheel and was able to do it in just a few minutes. Now I won't have to 'think' about turing off my high beams every time I make a turn! Thanks again for the clear instructions!

I might as well chime in - I just did this last week finally - installed h-4's at the same time. The quick fix took 20 minutes taking off the wheel and removing the entire switch housing - piece of cake - can't believe I waited so long to do it.

I have been waiting to fix this on my car for awhile. I removed the steering wheel and the plastic encasement. Using JW's advice regarding bending the thick silver bar, the car is fixed.

Thanks JW, David

Just wanted to say thanks to i_got_an_SC for this thread on the easy high beam switch repair. I must admit, it looked a little confusing to me when I stumbled across it several weeks ago. I ordered a new switch just in case. Attempted the "quick fix" today. Once you get everything opened up the "fix' is quite apparent and easy. Now I can return my pricey new switch that I no longer need! Will apply credit to new MOMO Race wheel!

Should this fix be referred to a moderator for possible addition to the permanent tech section list of fixes? Along with the alternate method of valve adjustment? Both have good pictures and have helped a lot of us.

I think it should be, but I'm a relative 'newb'. I'll leave that up to the 'elders'.

Hi,
Thanks for the great pictures & explanation, though I still have some questions...

My problem is a little different - started with no high beam, then my low beam went as well. Flash still works.

Looking at my switch, the low beam contact does not touch the the middle brass strip (all 3 brass strips are "separated"). When push to the high beam position, the little plastic tip retracts, but all the strips moves towards back of car & all contacts separates

I bent the big silver bar towards the 3 brass strips, and now low beam is back. But my high beam still no go. Any suggestions?

thanks!

I'll be digging in to my 'new' 89 this weekend to see if I can fix my no hi-beam situation.

Great post! Lost my headlights last night after a couple of months of involuntary highbeam situations. Luckily I was very close to home and the foglights still worked. Now I just need a leetle time.

just a bump for an excellent tech post; did the mod this morning, no more driving with left hand holding light switch pulled back so as not to blind other drivers!

Did the same fix on my '70, saved $100+ for a new switch.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump for a great write up. Just finished this in a matter of minutes thanks to Won, and John Walker's Post quoted below
