Decoding trim color

Hi all

I'm trying to decode the trim and paint codes on my '87 3.2 Coupe and it's proving a bit difficult over here (UK) for some reason so I thought I would come over to the oracle in the US that is Pelican Parts for help.

The line for the paint/trim codes on the car sticker is:

L35U DB

Anyone know the paint & trim names?

Thanks

NigelJ

The color is Venetian Blue Metallic. Could you post a photo or 2 of your interior or maybe a detailed description.

Great, thanks - that was really quick.

The interior is blue half leather with pin stripe cloth seat inserts. The leather on the seat bolsters has become scuffed and I want to recolor it. To do this I need to identify the trim color so that the supplier can make up the correct tone of blue.

Once again many thanks

Nigel,

The only thing my reference books say is 'Blue' for a color choice of either vinyl or leather. I am not sure how you could get a color sample unless you could use some other part of the interior that is the same shade of blue as the seat bolsters. Sorry not much help with this problem.

Thanks very much for your efforts - it seems the answer you have found is similar to that here, i.e. reather imprecise and also surprising given the vast amount of knowledge out there on almost every other aspect of these great cars. Perhaps there is a project here for someone with a bit of time on their hands.

Many thanks again

Nigel,

I had another thought. Maybe you could find someone who has a dealer Color and Material Sample book. I don't know if such thing exists for the 80's 911s but I have one from the early 70's for the 914 and 911. If you have a sample of the material then it would be easy to match that.

Here are the Porsche numbers for interior colors (seat colors aren't shown).

1KX is marine blue leatherette
TS1 is marine blue leather
UD6 is venetian blue leather

Here is the color chart from a French 86 brochure. There is only one blue shown in each material type, but no number.

Thats just great - exactly what I was seeking. I obviously mis-read the sticker - the line should read L35 UD6 (not B). So now I know that I have venetian metallic blue paint with venetian blue interior. Excellent. I'm onto the dye manufacturers (Gliptone here in the UK) now.

This board really is a fantastic knowledeg base. Many thanks to you all.

PS. It would be great to get all these paint & trim codes into a database on the web - any offers?

No you didn't. The option code sticker does not show the interior color. L35V (not U) is Marine Blue Metallic Clearcoat according to Paintscratch.com. The DB is who knows what? My 87 is L908 SW. Polar white with dark blue. So the SW is . . .?

Nigel;

Try looking in the front of the warranty and maintenance booklet for the car. For the US cars of that vintage, Porsche inserted a label showing the colors and options fitted to each car. There may have also been one in the front trunk area. I have no idea if UK cars had the same thing but it's easy to check.

Hmmm - just when I thought his was sorted............. I've checked in the service book and on the car again and it definately says L35V DB so I'm now unsure again over the interior color. I have contacted Porsche Cars GB who require "proof of ownership" before they will release any details abouth the car - data protection or something - so lets see what they come up with after I send them a copy of my V5 (UK registration document). This is getting complicated!!!!!

Thanks to you all I'll be back with the next chapter!

Well, Porsche GB have come back and advised that the interior colour is Marine blue so imcarthur was quite correct in saying I didn't know the interior color.

It does seem that the car and service book stickers do not carry the interior code - rather strange as everything else, options, etc are there in detail. I guess Porche had their reasons!

Once again, thanks for all the help here.
