Question hard ride on pavement, Tire problems? Need Advise.

I just had my 89 lowered and aligned with a bump steer kit installed. The ride is stable and tracks well but i can feel every crack and bump in the road. This condition existed before the lowering and alignment.

I am running 205/50/17 fronts and 255/40/17 rears Bridgestone Potenzas.

My shocks are stock Bilstein and are 2 years old.

What could the problem be????

Tires????
Balancing???

I'm very far from an expert, but you are running 17" tires 50 & 40 profile. That is part of your hard ride problem. What Bilsteins? HD or Sport? That's probably another.

To reverse the trend go back to 16" wheels with bigger profile (more air) tires. Softer Boge shocks. Etc. But you will lose the go-kart feel.

Yep... sportscars are supposed to be stiff and bumpy. I'd go with imcarthur's suggestions if you want to soften it up a little bit.

I'd recommend going to 15" wheels, the cheapest nastiest shocks you can buy at Kragens, and maybe you can find some torsion bars that are softer than stock!

What was it Jay Leno said when he was doing the Carrera GT speed test with David Donohue? Something like: "When you run over a dime with this car, you can tell whether it's heads or tails."

(But the answer is probably your tires, tire pressures, or whoever repairs your local streets.)

This has got to be a tongue-in-cheek post.

It's a sports car. If you want soft, then you've got the wrong type of car. Maybe a Mercedes might be better, eh?

Stiff suspension. Stiff sidewall, low profile tires. These give a car great handling but a cruddy ride.

Check your tire pressures. Drop them a little to soften the ride.

Check your tyre pressures... they may have been pumped up too much

tough group...

when did the suspension feel change? or has it always been like this?

how long have you owned the car?

did you move recently? and could different roads than you are used to be causing this?

have you driven other 911s to compare?
have other 911 owners driven yours to comapre?

How old are your tires?

I had the same complaint with my car a little while ago. I had SO3s that were just about worn out.

I decided to try a set of Avon M500s. Tire Rack got better times around the track with the Avons then they did with the SO3s and the Avons give a MUCH better ride.

The tires were the only thing I changed and the car is great deal more comfortable now. A night and day difference really. I was actually suprised at how different. It seems as tires get older or even as their tread wears down the ride quality deteriorates.

I like the other suggestions that have been offered but if new tires will get you what you want that would be ideal because you wouldn't have to trade away too much handling for comfort.

I live about 30 minutes north of the city if you ever want to ride in a 911 with a stock set up and 16" Avons for comparison.

rjb - where do you live in So. Cal. If you drive...say...the 170 North through North Hollywood up to the other side of the San Fernando Valley, any car that has "sport" attached to its definition of purpose will have a rough ride. It's just the nature of a freeway assembled like a Hot Wheels track.

Metro L.A., well, everyone knows those roads suck!

But if you need to examine something on your car, I'd take a stab at bushings...

Ah, give the guy a break; he's only got 38 posts. He just hasn't figured out what kind of car he really wants yet.

Another reason I'm keeping my Boges and 16" rims.

Grab the top of each wheel and push it back and forth to see if the wheel bearings are loose. If your wheel bearings are too loose it will give the ride an extremely tooth rattling quality.
