whats a 3.0 turbo engine worth and how to Id the case??
I need some advice on how to identify a 3.0L Turbo case and what a price range might be for a complete running 3.0L Turbo engine would be-
recently built but has a couple snapped head studs, otherwise complete and running- Thanks, Jeff Last edited by rsNINESOOPER; 11-09-2005 at 03:03 PM.. |

It will have a few $$$ in the #.
Thats an aluminum case that uses the early 65-77 small crankshaft journal sizes and can be opened up for larger jugs . Also used on the 77` euro carrera 3.0 non turbo. Kurt Williams

have you checked the cost of parts lately? IF you can find 3.0 turbo P+Cs, there's about $3K alone, maybe more. we're talking a real rebuild, not a ring and bearing job. 45 hours or so labor, that's $4-4.5K, all valves, $500, all rockers and shafts, new oil pump instead of reusing the old one, new intermediate shaft, etc, etc. it gets up there. a 3.0 can go $10K these days for quality first cabin rebuild, and more. if the aforementioned parts were still in excellent shape, you could knock a couple grand and more off those totals, but then you couldn't call it first cabin, more of a "poor man's" rebuild.

seems every time i research parts prices to pencil out costs of a rebuild, it's more than the last time. i hesitate to quote anything off the top of my head anymore because the prices seem to go up weekly. i sure hope these cars stay reasonably affordable in the future.

It IS a scary proposition to rebuild a turbo motor. The case may be 30 years old and the parts prices are going out of sight. One thing John did not mension (directly) was the NUMBER of parts. When I disassembled my 3.3L I could swear there are twice as many parts as my 3.0L SC engine had. The CIS and Exhaust system alone have a gazillion parts.
I'm afraid it soon won't be worth rebuilding these engines. A few more years and all the available parts will be for restorations and vintage show cars. I don't know of anyone producing new cases. The old cases are going to start showing heat and age problems. Hot rod rebuilding is an order of magnitude more expensive. I paid $500 four years ago for a set of ARP head studs. I am ashamed of how much was spent on the engine. Mike is right about the cost, pure foolishness.

Thanks for breaking it down for me, John. Scary, I too hope these cars continue to be affordable.

And that's just back to stock....If you get the "While I'm in there..." disease, figure ~$20K. ....Don't ask me how I know.

I'm just wanting to know as much as I can before I go look at an engine I'm interested in so I know exactly what I'm looking at. Thanks everyone who has chimed in, as usual I amazed at how many of you folks have such in depth knowledge of these P cars. Especially the obscure things- brilliant Thanks, Jeff |

The engine type number is on the right rear, just below the fan housing pedestal.
I'm in the middle of a 3.0 rebuild now. If I were doing it again, maybe I wouldn't. Just go price a genuine 3.0 Turbo gasket kit. Porsche quotes something over $1,500. Even the Wrightwood Racing kit is well over $500. P/Cs? I'm too embarrassed to say how much I paid. What was the sealant that Porsche used on these engines? It's tough brown stuff. It looks like the old Permatex brown stuff, with the brush in the can, but it sticks like nothing else. Last edited by Tom F2; 11-10-2005 at 07:28 PM.. |

OK Tom, you should tell us what you paid for your P/Cs.
Does anyone clean up or replate their stock cylinders on these and use JEs? This seems much cheaper and JEs are used in lots of other turbo applications. To me, it doesn't seem like 6.5:1 is the ideal compression ratio... Do 3.0 turbos have the same head gasket arrangement as an SC? Cheers,
