Whats a basket case 914/6 worth ? Help
I have an opportunity to buy a real 914/6 that was brought here from germany around 1980 . The owner took it completely apart and sent out the tub to be acid dipped . The car now sits on jackstands in a garage where it has sat since 1983.
He has every part from it including all the rare stuff particular to the 914/6 . The owner lives in florida and his father has allowed the car to sit there all these years . Well now the house is in contract and will be sold very soon . I spoke with the son(owner) by phone tonight while I was there with his father looking at the car/parts . I would like to get some opinions on this purchase and what I should pay for it . Sorry I left my camera memery card in my pc and couldnt shoot pics . Here are more details Chassis First off the car was previously hit in the left front and the metal was straightened very nicely . You can barely tell . The body has factory steel 916 flares butt welded on (nice job) and I can see the welds clearly because it was acid dipped . The chassis has a very light haze of surface rust covering 90% of it (no pitting found). Included are the orig chrome bumpers (both mildly dented but no rust) . Fiberglass 916 front spoiler and some boxes of new body parts that were on a shelve 12` high (didnt open them). Engine The engine case is a type 901/01 non original aluminum unit thats been fully machined and opened up for these sweet looking new aftermarket(not mahle) made 92mm (well he said there 95mm) cylinders . Jugs are aluminum and nickie plated. Forgot the brand. They have weird spacers under them to raise them up about 1/2". Ever seen this ? Pistons are Arais and very high domed(also new) . He said comp ratio is to be 9.6 using the(dated) 4/69 rebuilt ported heads . This is without a twin plug . Owner said the engine was to be 2.8 liter . The crank is still in the machinists packaging and looks like a 66mm counterweighted piece thats marked .010/.010. Rods are rebuilt factory 901 units wrapped in plastic bags. Cams are web and new in box . Said they are S pec . Carbs are stock weber 40mm and look new . I saw the chokes were 30mm so they likely have not been modified to match the engine build. Many other components like chains, oil pump, distributor, etc were not found in the 30+ boxes of crap . Everything is wrapped in newspaper or plastic from 1983 . Im assuming he bought new or improved items to complete the build but I didnt look through everything. The rest of the engine including a powdercoated fan , cooling shroud (black) , cam housings , are cleaned and look new . He said on the phone that "dont worry, everything is there". Also included is the correct heat exchangers but one has heavy rust near the muffler flange. The oil tank looks like it too was acid dipped and looks like new aside from light surface rust . The oil coler was a modified 911 unit with the outlet bent 90 deg so it would fit. All the engine mounts and tin were powdercoated and look perfect . All the engine hardware plus other hardware are all individually packaged and electroplated . They all look new. Suspension and brakes All suspension and brakes are original and will need rebuilding. Correct axles are complete and intact . Wheels are vintage fuchs (real one`s) in 15x8 and 15x7(not 911r) and are in great shape . Also included is a unknown year 2.0 4 cyl 914 with moderate rust in the rockers but complete . And it has brand new stainless heat exchangers (never installed) for the 4cyl engine. Also has a set of 4 lug gas burners for the 4cyl car too . As for paperwork and documentation . He had never registered the car here in the states after bringing it to the USA . He has some german paperwork and customs paperwork too (didnt see the stuff) . Also has receipts for all the engine work . The garage is loaded with old Porsche parts and in much disarray . Everything will go with this deal . I gave him(the father) an offer before I left and will hear from him tommorow. What do you guys think this package should be worth ? And should I put this thing together or sell the parts and chassis separate . One more final note . Both the father and son(by phone) said the car is not a regular 914/6 but couldnt elaborate . I left the vin # at work but it started with 914043???? . So its likely just a standard 1970 914/6 . It has a targa roof too so its not a 916 . WHATS IT WORTH ?? Kurt Williams

I saw a rat that was a runner sell for 12,000 a while back. I sold my pristine conversion a year ago for 12,000 so maybe that will help. I know another guy locally has one and its all rusted wants 9,000 for that and the engine is toast

Quite a find, an real piece of history, I'm so jealous. It should keep you busy for a few months at least.
You might get more help over on the 914 forum if you haven't tried already. Also you might try calling George Hussey at Automobile Atlanta, these guys know 914's. George is real purist when it comes to 914's, he will drool when you tell him about this one. He has a small museum of sorts with a couple of the most perfect 914/6's you will ever see outside of the Porsche Museum. Automobile Atlanta P.S. Don't tell him where it is, he might try and grab it first ![]() Good Luck and keep us posted. Andrew

I know a guy who bought a really nice, clean, straight, dry one with the engine in pieces, for $3500

IMO $10k including the parts car.
You will end up spending at least that much to put it back together, even if you do most of the work yourself. So for a little over $20k you will end up with a car that is worth between $20k and $25k. Rust would be the deal killer but from your description it sounds like the longs are in good shape. |

so the car was acid dipped and not primered....sat for 22 years and only has light "haze" of surface rust. Thats amazing. I have been told that once you dip or blast the car, you have to primer immediately or the car disintegrates!! This is important to me cause im about to venture into a 2yr project involving a total strip to bare metal via media blasting. Looks like its ok to strip and let it sit up for a while as long as its not out in the yard

I bought something similar, an original /6 with boxes and boxes of parts, including all the original hard to find /6 specific parts, and a slightly rusty but basically straight tub for $ 3,500 last summer. Did not have an engine or trany, though.
The engine you are looking has some valuable parts, the case notably. But putting that engine together is foing to be a lot of dollars, no question. I would say $3500 + $1,500 for the engine parts. I know some people are going to say this part or that part is worth a ton, but it's worth that only to a willing buyer. My own .02 |

Kemo, I'm no expert but years ago when I was looking to acid dip an old Chevy truck cab, I was told the neutralizer they use will dry to leave a slight white coating, kinda similar to a dusting with flour. It does not prevent rust indefinitley, but it does for the short term (you know? Like 22 years:>). This is why this 914-6 lasted as long as it has without being primed. If its been inside a closed garage a slight even surface rust is probably recoverable. But I'd be REAL particular about how/who I had deal with it.

Kurt,
In rereading your post I'd say 8-10K. You know the work involved to gete it back together if it's all there and since the motor is not original then I'd really be hard pressed to pay much more for it. There are some nice sounding parts there and the last statement "Both the father and son(by phone) said the car is not a regular 914/6 but couldnt elaborate" has me curious. It sounds like a very fun car once it's up and going. Good luck and please keep us informed.
