Need help! I have searched the threads and I was not able to find a similar situation (not that there wasn't one). I searched back about 12 months and nothing.
Here's the situation: Last weekend I drove around all day in my 75. It was a mixture of stop and go as well as a couple of long, high-speed hauls. I must have stopped and started about 8 times. Drove home, parked the car and let her rest for a day. Then, the following morning, I went to start the car only to find that it would not. The car cranked but would never start. I checked the ignition and all was fine. Fuel in the tank and good pressure. Not bad fuses or relays. Later in the week, I tried to start and it started and ran fine. Any ideas why this could be?? Your help is appreciated. |

Had similar issue with an 84 targa and it was the DME relay. 75 doesn't have one of these I'm pretty sure, but it sounds electrical. Rule one, check the electrical otherwise, check the electrical.

Other than checking spark, what else could it be? I had spark but it would not fire.

You said you checked the red fuel pump relay right?

Check the output of your battery. All those starts may have drained it, while the longer runs may not have been enough to recharge. Sometimes on these cars, there is enough power to run the starter but not fire the engine.

acapella8 - I did check the red relays.
Paulporsche - I didn't know that. So the battery could have enough "juice" to crack but not start the car. I crancked on the started for a while and it nevet caught. If the battery was low I would assuem that it would have run down fairly quick. As far as the clogged filter or bad pump. Why would the car start after sitting a bit longer, even after I tried to start it. Is it possible that I flooded the intake and therefore wouldn't start? |

That happened to me last weekend and it was the battery, thankfully.

I have a hard time believing that considering I cranked on the start for a while.
If this is the case, what should I check? I replaced the battery about a year ago. |

Sometimes the simplest things will make you crazy. A few days ago my 82 SC died on me. I had to push the Targa back to my garage. I rest for a while and then turn the key on and notice that the fuel pump was off . I move around the cables in the fuse box and a spark jumped. One of the cables that supply electricity to the rellay and Fuel Pump was loose. I just clean it and put some dielectric grease in the cable and reinstal it and "presto" Hope I can be of some help..! It's killing me. I'll just take it out again and wait a day to see if it happens again. If it does, I suppose I'll have to look at everything a little closer.

Check the voltage at the battery with the engine off (if you can't start it, it helps!). Is it low? Have you checked it when it was running recently?
If it's low, throw it on a charger for a little while and see if it fires up. If it does after charging for a while, then your charging system is probably not doing it's job well, or the battery is losing it's ability to hold a charge.

In this case, I did not need to place a charger on the battery because it crancked up the following day. This was a full day after I drove the car.
If I attempt to start the car today I have no problems. It's only when the car have been run for a while and it has time to sit. I was thinking it could possibly be the cold start valve satying open or something. |

Ram,
If your cold start injector does not work, the car will crank but never fire. I can't tell you why it wouldn't work one day and then be fine the next. The cold start injector gets power from the starter (it only runs when the starter is engaged) then it goes through the theromtime switch on the drivers rear of the engine. It sounds like you aren't getting fuel from either a bad connection to the fuel pump, or a bad connection to the cold start injector. Don't spend too much time looking for the red fuel pump relay, 1975 did not have one. Rex

Well, I'll just have to see if it happens again and check the cold start valve if it does.
THank you all for your suggestions and comments. This board is GREAT. |
