Crane/Marelli doesn't fit?

My mechanic has been attempting to install a Crane 'electonic points' kit on my 1970 911t. I'm not sure of the exact details but the correct kit doesn't fit on the distributor. He bought the kit from performance porsche in Florida. They are now trying to sell him a bosch set-up to the tune of $800. We're probably just going to back to stock as fortunately I recently purchased a spare Marelli distributor thru this board as the original now won't work because he broke a piece trying to get the crane kit to fit. Any other experiences with a electronics point kit on a Marelli set-up?

The Marelli is not a dizzy your really want to screw with. Leave alone or replace it. The caps and rotors are no longer available.

Give it the float test and when it doesn't come back to the surface, replace it with a Bosch or an aftermarket one.

I have to ask, what's "the float test"?

Yep, I went through this a few years back. Plan on changing to a Bosch as the Marelli is now no longer serviceable... Buying everyone else's will just see you with a collection of unserviceable Marellis....

Rather than spend big on a new Bosch, just acquire a 2.7, remove the vacuum retard unit, and have it turned down to the Marelli dimensions by a competent machinist. Then add your Crane unit. My total cost for this (not including the Crane) was $250 including having the dizzy regraphed for my motor.

Actually you can get caps and rotors for the Marelli, but they are big $$$ and you still end up with a crap dizzy. I bought an almost new Bosch replacement from someone on this board for under $200 and then put the Crane kit in it. No problems since.
