where to get 11 blade engine fan for 3.2?

Where can a source a 11 blade engine fan for my 3.2? Pelican no longer stocks this.

Does anyone have the fan listed in the link above? Can it be polished to the same finish that our factory fans can? The reason I ask is about a month ago I took mine off to polish it and some of the blades have small chips in them.

I was ready to buy a new one from Pelican and it was NLA. Called my mechanic and he has some original ones still in the box for big $$$$. Then he asked how big the chips are and said just keep an eye on it and if they get bigger replace it. Now every time I am at red line in second and third gear I think about the fan shattering into millions of pieces. Granted I have put 40000 miles on the car in the last 3 years and I am sure the fan has been chipped for all of them.

Used ones are very hard to come by and I doubt automotion sells a new one. Vertex is making new ones but I think they are aluminum instead of magnesium.

Didn't 3.2's come with 11 blade fans, or am I just missing something?

Are the OEM fans magnesium? Lighter than the Al versions?
Do we know if the automotion version is OEM?

Yes they came with 11 blades, but the one he has on his car is Chip.

Does that mean his fan goes faster?

Ruf,

Yes, my fan goes much faster with the chips. I will trade you even my chipped much faster fan for an unchipped slower 3.2 OEM fan. I will even cover the shipping.

I can always count on you all to take anything out of context.

Simon, I will call them this week after my finals and see what the fan is made out of and if it is OEM.

How about junk yards? E-bay? Will you settle for a nice used one? Sorry Wayne, but Performance Products seems to offer them. Are they aftermarket? Maybe I should spend my week looking for good used 11 blade fans....

Kind of nervous about used engine parts. I suppose a good used one will be ok but will look into performance products. Thanks Dave.

How about covering up the chips on the old fan with a bit of Kevlar and clear epoxy over the entire magnesium surface ... sort of like the look of the 917 fan and ductwork ???

They may offer them, but they ain't got em. I've been on this ride before.

If you can wait a little, start calling the used parts dealers....everyday. I would rather have a used OEM fan than an aftermarket aluminum one.

Also post an WTB in the parts section. I had both a fan & housing (powder coated) that I sold awhile back (to someone hotrodding a VW) that were in excellent condition. I had no idea they were NLA, or I would have kept it...

If the chip is not too large, you could file down the blade on the other side of the fan and then have the whole assembly balanced.

How about posting a pic of the chip. It may not be as bad as you think.

Correct link is : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORSCHE-911-930-ENGINE-COOLING-FAN_W0QQitemZ4595346080QQcategoryZ10408QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If that does not work (copy the entire link, not just the top line) then go to www.ebay.co.uk and search for item number : 4595346080

I personally would look for a used one over a new repro version. There are loads of them out there somewhere. Everytime a 911 engine blows and is not rebuilt that is one more fan available. Hate to say it but would contact the engine guys and might even call Motorscheister, but would try the reputable guys first.

Also agree with the above posters and if the chip is not that bad would just continue to use it. Dressing out the edges of the crack would help and removing the same amount of material from the blade opposite would balance it out. If anyone needs help on how to do this properly can give them referrals on how to do this on propellors or jet turbine blades, which are the same type of thing. All you are doing is moving air.

Thanks Guys,

I will start calling around to the dismantlers and see what I can find. The chips were small except for one where the corner of the blade was gone. I will try to get a picture at the end of the week after my last final.

It looked like the fan had hit the housing at some point--I am sure the car has had an interesting life before me. I know that one of the PO's did things a little differently than what everyone else would prefer. The fan appears to be balanced, the alternator bearings are quiet and also appear to be original.

Another option I was thinking about would be can you put a 3.6 fan and housing on a 3.2. I just happen to know of where a trashed 3.6 is sitting collecting dust, I might be able to get the fan and housing for cheap. Thanks again, this is what makes Pelican great.
