unexpected while your in there...
It was time to pull the engine/tranny and replace the clutch and it's components to get my car back on the road. All is going well as I disconnect electrical connections, oil lines, CV's...etc. The unexpected came when I attempted to dosconnect the solenoid/starter. When I attempted to turn the nut, the entire thing went crunch and the bolt/nut turned and broke.
![]() So with that I am still without my car on the road while I source a solenoid for the car. The good news is I was able to get all the other things done over the past two days, and I am able to install the solenoid with the starter in place. ![]() I guess we can always expect something to go wrong when we do a complete drop like this. On a side note...I did get the tub notched so that I am able to simply place jack stands under the engine/tranny and lift the car straight up, much easier than before. ![]()

I’m glad it turned out OK.
This is one (of many) issue that the DIY person faces. The wonderful aspect of this Forum is to reproduce those issues and when they occur, solve them. A trained, skilled and experienced shop mechanic has experience and has solved these and many other problems over the years. This is why they are worth a “shop rate.” On the other hand, this Forum provides some of that experience for free. The trade-off is to reciprocate with your detailed experience. Everyone benefits, even the shops. I will speculate there are very few current Porsche technicians who have tuned a 356 4-cam Carrera. The goal is to pass along that information. And MFI and CIS and DME and Motronic, and …. Without that continuum of information flow, Porsche will cease to exist. PAG seems marginally inclined to support their legacy. thanks guys for the comments. I agree Grady, the more we share here the better we can learn and continue to keep these old cars going. Randy, I inspected the CV boots and decided to save the replacement for another time since the solenoid has set me back time wise. Jgordan...I made a small 1"x3" slot directly under the shift rod in the tunnel. This notch allows the engine/tranny to be dropped straight down (supported on jack stands) while the car is lifted off. I coated the fresh cut to prevent rust and have a rubber block that will plug the notch during normal use.

Yeah......pix of that notch in the underside of the tunnel would be nice.
Did you use a jig saw for the cut? Did it hurt cutting into the metal; meaning: how did you muster the courage to do this? Also, when you experienced the broken nut/bolt, did you apply any German cuss words? Remember that these cars understand German, it's best to curse in Hungarian although the Dutch, and the Swiss, have a very good arsenal.

ha ha yeah a little German cuss words along with the ol' American faitful F word! I will take a picture of the cut when I am installing the solenoid this week. It was not that much to muster the nerve to cut that spot, I am a GruppeB guy ya know. =o) To make the cut I used a cutting wheel, and then painted the fresh cut with POR-15 so it will not rust. The rubber boot that covers the opening to the tunnel is still in place, and the rubber block will fill in the cut so moisture will stay out of the tunnel.

BTW...went to 5 different auto parts places, a BOSCH service center and the local Porsche dealership in search of a solenoid with no luck. Before all of that running around checked our host and also no solenoid, just the starter/solenoid combo. =o( I have managed to locate one, so if anyone in the future is in the need PM me and I will let you know where.
