time to buy another 911?

Well, after living with the subaru for about 9 months now, I have to say I miss driving the 911 on a regular basis. Plus the damn thing is just too big...I can't get used to it. I'm thinking of selling the subie, and a couple of options exist:

a used Honda Civic hatchback - advatange is it is cheap and can haul enough stuff, smaller than subie

a new Mini Cooper S - advantage is it is cooler, still small and can haul enough stuff

But...crazy me starts thinking about just getting another 911. A nice stock car for everyday driving, then another nasty track prepped (but street legal machine). So I could swap my current SC back to street status (I have all the interior parts), and then find a relatively cheap prepped car (I'm leaning towards either an early car or 74-75 due to smog reasons). I would be able to carry a third person (ie my son) in a pinch, and can haul my music gear, although not and carry another person. No decent AC, but I lived without it for 2 years before.

Or buy a 993 for street and have my AC too...but that's out of budget I think...

Crazy? Probably...but I really like driving my 911. And I need something with a semi-back seat on occasion and with a rollbar that doesn't leave me with one-car options...

Decisions, decisions...

I just put my Carrera to bed for at least four long months. I am stuck with the Jeep all winter. Takes a lot of wine, women and song to beat withdrawal symptoms during that period.

If I lived in your healthy climate I would pic a Porsche for a daily driver. AC or not.

I could sell you a "nasty track prepped machine but street legal machine", it's almost time for a change for me too! Need a different project now that I am down to the short strokes on this one...

*EDIT* typing problems due broken finger!

Cheers

Not a crazy idea at all, Todd. You and I must be on the same clock. I just finished, for the most part, all I can do with my car without "throwing money" at it. Sure enough, a month later, I'm now thinking about 996s.

I started this thead in OT that might be worth looking into: Some questions about 996s

Please move it to the "Technical" section if you feel it is appropriate.

Oh yeah, I could sell you my street-legal/race ready '74, but now, after everything, it won't be cheap.

Your answer lies within the heart of another question, Grasshopper...

Is it ever NOT time to buy another 911?

Took a job with a long commute so I bought a Miata to drive to work (from LA to OC-85 miles round trip). Decided I missed driving the 911 too much. Sold the Miata. If a 993 is too much, you should try a 964, they feel very similar (though the 993 is more comfortable with its multi-link rear suspension).

My wife has a MINI Cooper S. Her commute is much shorter than mine. When gas prices went nuts I tried driving her MINI Cooper S for a little while. Didn't last long. I just love to drive my 911.

Of course you could try to find a pristine, perfect Carrera. Or even a pristine, perfect SC. Oh wait, you've done that...

Returning your SC to street use seems like a trip (and money) in the wrong direction. YMMV. If you are looking for a daily driver, C2, even a C4 would work. But it's hard to find one in decent shape for less than $25. And when things break - ouch.

I love my CooperS for a daily driver. Peppy, easy to manuver. Heated seats and cold AC. Same could be said for a Civic except for the peppy part. And it's not as neat.

IMHO, Carreras are soft in the market right now, and best value for the money. I've had three Carrera cabs and one coupe, and found them to be great DDs.

On paper 964s are an even better deal, but they are a bit more complex.

Or go a completely different way like I did and get an Audi A3 turbo.

True, but no car payment for the civic. Plus I can get a really big exhaust for the civic, and a couple of stickers. Then I'd be as peppy as your mini

The thought of having to keep a track 911 and daily driver 911 running is somewhat scary given that I don't have the space or tools or technique to do the work myself. More thinking required...

Maybe I need to trade the Subie wagon for an STI...

JMO but 911s are a lot more fun when they are NOT daily drivers.

That is not meant to imply that they can't be used that way, it's just that that is not thier niche.

I exhibit the same symptom ANY time I have any extra cash . If your lifestyle permits it, and its what you want, then go for it. My wife would shoot me if I sold the scoobie for another 911

Ummm...my car's driven daily, and loves it. I think they're a waste of money if they can be driven in only certain conditions.

Size is all about perspective, methinks. When driving my old Dodge pickemup, I get the impression that the new mini is a cute little thing. One day, I pulled into the local Chevron to gas up the 911. Ahead of me in line was a new mini. The mini looked HUGE from my early 911 sports seat viewpoint.

re daily driver - it depends on where you are driving... note the New York vs. LA perspectives above.

What is it about the Sub wagon that you like? Don't like? I'd make a list and then migrate in that direction. Sounds like a nice hatchback might be the ticket...

hmm....good idea.

like: hatchback and 4 doors makes grocery getting and hauling the boy around easy. AC/heat works perfect. Warranty. Decent gas mileage.

don't like: car payment. a little bigger (or at least *feels* bigger) than I like. A bit crisper handling and a little more oomph would be nice.

Obviously I need a Cayman...well, except for the price tag. I lived with the 911 as my only car for about 6 months. The only time I didn't like it was for the quick trips to the grocery store, and also the fact that I can't carry more than one person. Sometimes I'd like to haul my son and another person.

I think that the last generation Si hatchbacks are probably cheap these days, as they didn't sell well. My bass rig is pretty compact and I don't really need a whole lot of storage/hauling space (hence considering a Mini S).

what Japanese co. has copied that formula...

I don't get it. I'd rather drive a crummy (but reliable) 911 daily than have no 911 at all.
