Porsche Crest MSD Ignition

Can some one give me a guide on installing an MSD box (with msd coil) on a 74 CIS 911 with pictures.
I have found the wire colors dont match on my car to what the book says they are. I ask for pictures and description for all of us people who have MSD's in their garage and dont know how to install it. Wayne Dempsey left pictures out from his book on this.
I can tear apart airplanes but when it comes to cars, they just dont make any sense to me. I could go on and on about the differences between airplanes (Jets not the carberated ones...thats another story)and cars. Someone please give us some pictures.

Do a search on "MSD Wiring".
There a plenty of posts on this subject. I just installed a twin plug system on my '73 chassis an the postings were invaluable.

I have no idea what kind of coil I have....But it will be replaced by a MSD coil as well.

I believe the rev limiter is in the distributor if that is what you are talking about.

Doherty,

Nitrometano's question was whether you have magnetic reluctor trigger with magnetic-pickup coil ... and, no, you don't, since that didn't happen until the '78 models!

Your coil is the Bosch 0.221.121.006 CDI model with closely-spaced primary connectors for the special wiring loom connector.

Something wrong with your Permatune box?

Nothing is wrong

Nothing is wrong I wanted to do everything I could to improve the performance of my CIS 2.7 without having to tear down the motor.....yet. I know the cams are next. But I dont want to part with the CIS system. How are those performance plug wires?

Do I really need anything else for the MSD system if I put the 6000 rev limiter on the MSD box. My rev limiter is currently set at 6300 from the distributor....or so they say.

Getting rid of those problematic Beru wires is a good start. You'll need to do that anyway if you go MSD since Beru wires are incompatible.

speaking of plugs

My mechanic pulled by platinums out and put regular back in because he said that they were getting so hot that they would break and cause damage to valve. And then showed me a couple. What about the iridium plugs? And does it matter on what wires I get? how about these?

also
"Put a big bore throttle body and 1978 big runners" is this a CIS system from a 78?. I had heard that the performance that was gained was not worth the expense. Care to counter that?

What? Beru wires won't work with MSD?

Damn, I'm gonna have to get new wires... again... when I pony up to an MSD ignition. I suspect I'll see a good difference between the '69 battery inductive system and a nice MSD unit.

Nice Dhoward... I figured it would be a great difference. My '69 has a '70 2.2l T engine in it, but I'm (going to be) using the '69s ignition, as I didn't want to futz with the wiring too much. Dropping in an MSD unit should be pretty easy, right?

Very easy, Makes a really fun spark! For a car with regular inductive ignition and carbs, you notice a big difference in lower RPM driveability. Makes carb adjustment easier too. May need a newer tach as the 69 had a tach interface box.....

hmm... I have a tach from a 70 T available to me. The engine is from the same 70T that had the Bosch CDI ignition. Do you think swapping the tach over would be a good idea when I get around to doing the MSD? (probably Feb-March time frame)

You'll need the MSD tach adaptor or you can have North Hollywood Speedometer convert your '71 tach to be compatible with the MSD.

Matt,

If you use the '70 ballast unit along with the '70 tach wired to the new coil same as the factory coil ... it should work fine without having to use the MSD tach adapter, which isn't intended to be used with a tach designed for a high-Voltage signal like produced with the ballast unit. The MSD tach adapter is designed for tachs using the conventional switched 12 Volt signal at the coil.
