Dash Turn Signal Indicators
First, when signalling left, both left and right arrows (on the dash) would illuminate.
I pulled and checked the front lamps (which were fine), and the problem exactly switched to the opposite. All exterior lamps light properly. Now reagardless of right or left signalling, both arrows on the dash light up. Any suggestions? Thanks, David

David , I had the same problem. I believe you need to check the bulb amperage. Do a search in this forum, this subject comes up quite often. Seems like and easy fix- but I still need to get a round to it!

IIRC, my coupe did that for a while... I think I pulled the tach out, and pulled and reconnected all of the wires on the back.

I have the same thing going on. I shall just sit here and await some ideas.I figured it was a short somewhere,but I could never find it,I haven't had the turn signal switch apart yet though.

Both front bulbs are new and indentical two-fillament bulbs. I have not yet checked the rears. But if bulb wattage is the issue then I cannot understand why the problem went from left signallying to right, then either without any changes to the bulbs.

David, I tried a search about the dual bulb TS flashing, but couldn't find the thread that explained it well. It was something about using a 4 watt TS bulb instead of a 12(?) watt Anyway, the wrong bulb(too low or too high) will affect the operation of the TS relay and cause this symptom.
(I think the lower watt bulb wouldn't provide enough power to the relay to operate correctly). I believe the TS relay also operates the emergency flashers, and that can confirm if the relay is defective. Hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about will help all of us!! Joe

It's typically when a bulb is burning out, or has burnt out. When I replaced the bulbs in my old '72, I could see that the contacts had some surface corrosion on them. After cleaning that, only one indiator would illuminate again.
I would try cleaning all the contacts, and making sure wire connections/grounds are good.

My car does that too. What wattage should the bulbs be? I took everything out and cleaned it up but both indicators on the dash light up and my kids make fun of it.

I'm having the same problem with my '83 SC. From what I get from this thread the problem could be because of the following reasons;
1)Burned out Bulb 2)Bulb in the process of burning out 3)Bad Relay Anyone else have any experience? Thanks |

I thought I was the only one! At least I'm in good company.
The very first flash of the left arrow in the dash solid and bright. Then immediately both arrows light simultaneously, but dimmer. When I put on the right turn signal there is no problem, it signals correctly and brightly on the dash! I tried messing with the front signal housings - bulbs out, etc. and thought I had fixed it (poor contact in left front signal housing not a burned out bulb) but I was in a rush and think I hooked up a wire incorrectly. Its still doing it and the left front has gone back to not working. I never considered looking to see if the bulb wattages all matched, hmm? I've been meaning to get back to it, now this thread gives me a reason. So, anyone know definitively (Grady, Steve Weiner, Souk, Bill Verbug, other?) if it should be a 4 watt or a 12watt or something else? Oh, my car is a '76 but I imagine it applies across the board.

Try poping the cover of the turn signal relay off and check the pc board where it mounts to the connector. A faulty conection there could cause a problem like you mentioned.

I started this thread a few months ago. Upon the advise here I checked and ll 4 bulbs are the same wattage (and also look like they were all replaced at the same time). The problem persists.
I have not been able to check abyting else since JAnuary as my car is at Supertec. I'd love to hear if anyone succeds in eliminating this devil

My turn signal lights were working perfectly. In the final stages of my interior restoration they went south. I could have been the source of the turn signal anomoly.
It is possible that I either; 1)Jiggled a wire loose at the Tachometer (while installing a GPS speed signal wire to the speedo) 2)Jiggled a relay in the fuse box 3)Caused a short? (No other systems are acting up.) Hopefully we can figure this headache out. |

I also have the same 'Double dim' turn signal lights in the dash.I hope some guru can come up with a solution that I can comprehend and apply. (Electrics are the spawn of the devil !)

Still no luck in solving the double arrow issue, However in the process of looking for the problem I replaced a burned out driving light, I repaired a broken headlight washer switch, and I installed a missing seat belt relay. Still that damn double arrow. I am going to improve the ground to the tach to see if that fixes the problem.

My '72 T does it too, so I'll keep an eye on this thread. My '72 2002 does a similar thing where the indicator flashes once or a few times, and I noticed the second "click" sound also disappears when the dash ts bulb stops flashing. I always suspected a grounding issue. The '02 has new front bulbs and nothing has changed. The 911's been doing it for at least five years with the same bulbs as before.

Problem Solved. When I took my '83 Cab to TRE to have some exhaust work done I asked Jeremy what he thought the problem was. He said, check all the bulbs, then the relay.
Sounds Simple enough. I did check the bulbs, which were all fine. So rather than check the relay, I bought a turn signal assembly on Ebay and installed that. No difference. I took all the bulbs out and cleaned the contacts. No difference. Finally I bought a new relay 914 618 303 11. It works perfectly. Should have listened to Jeremy. At least I have an extra turn signal assembly.

My symptoms are similar, except that I can get back to a bright, single indicator by getting my foot off the brakes or goosing the throttle a bit. I've been thinking it's a ground issue, but haven't had a chance to pursue it.
Today (yesterday actually) I hit a bump and lost my headlights and driving lights (and had my wipers come on at the same time.) When I got to work, I stopped and could hear something buzzing when I turned on the headlights. Turned out to be the headlight relays (Sucro kit has been in for more than a year - this is the first it's acted up at all.) Anyone have any experience here that might lead to a quick fix?? TIA Dave

Ground clamp at battery was loose. I know the shop had it off last week. I'll have to have a little chat with them about thoroughness.
