I have not driven the GT much but it is totally different car. The 911 just shrinks around you and you feel one with the car. With the GT you are aware you are driving a big car. Plus it's heavy. Yes it has a torque monster in the back, but it is still 500 lbs heavier than my 993. I haven't had the confidence of tossing it around much (the fact that it is very clear in my head the memory of writing a big check probably is holding me back a little). The other thing is that in 3rd at 1k rpm you are doing 55 mph. The limits of the car are obvioulsy unreacheable on the street. It feels like the GT would be perfect for a track like VIR (or the Ring or Le Mans (doh) for that matter) but would be too much for a shorter and tighter circuit. For example I did the Tail of the Dragon last Summer with my 993 and I don't think the GT would be as much fun. Hopefully (lots of things need to fit) I will be able to take both cars to CMP for a track day session on May 18. Still trust me guys... the 911 is something special. The fact that the GT is not blowing me away in pure driving experience terms (Ok maybe this is a little early as I haven't really driven it much) is a testament of how good we have it with our 20-30 yr old cars. |

I like your analysis, Teo.
I've been on track in a ferociously driven Carrera GT, and while it is undeniably quick, it lacked "that special visceral feel". The howl one hears from outside a CGT is replaced by a resonating growl inside the car, the car is phenomenally quick on corner entry, and the brakes.........sweet Mother of.....otherworldy. But: 911s are rewarding cars to drive quickly and they certainly don't tolerate mistakes, and take true skills over a few years to even come close to feeling like you've taken it all out of it. I'm not even close to getting all I can out of the 930 -

and some of us (myself) have not.... Back in 04 (i think) my dad was a potential GT customer, and because of his long standing relationship with B.C. ford we had an all black (no stripes) car for 1 1/2 days... i wasn't allowed to touch the drivers seat...but i can tell you that from the passenger seat it was pretty wild... though my dad disliked the shifter, especially the fact that it was angled.. it does sounds pretty neat though. If i had an ~100k to spend on a supercar it would most likely be my choice... though a nice modern rsr rebuild would make a good arguement. and i agree, we have it very good with our 30 yr old cars. have you taken the gt to redline yet?
