First 25 mlles with Steve Wong chip!!!

I guess I've been reading this board to much, every time I do it cost's me money. Lately I've been checkin out the posts on chips for 3.2 Carrera, they all said the same thing, seems like a good performance upgrade to me. Soooooooo...

Today the mail man brought a new Steve Wong chip.

Install took about 15 min. hit the key and varoom, she fired up and purred like a kitten. Finished putting up my tools while she warmed a few min.. Buckled myself in and bumped the throttle and WOW what a difference in the response. Went for a little drive, 25 miles or so and the car has really come alive especially in the lower RPM ranges. Did not have the opportunity to really open it up for any distance but the change is significant. I still have about 1/2 tank of 87 octane fuel in it that I'll burn out in the next couple of days. It'll be interesting to see how much better it runs with the correct fuel.

Thanks to all who have posted on this subject and provided the information and knowledge that would normally not be available to most of us, Thanks also to Pelican for this board.

I wonder if the SW chip would make it more difficult to pass smog here in California?

Talked to Steve W. just before I had my smog done last December. He said there's a 1/5 chance that a CA. car (84-89 at least) with his chip won't pass smog. All dependent on the condition of other sensors and condition of components. So I just swapped back the OEM chip and re-installed it after the smog check.

This thread

Flunked CA smog test

should help to answer the question and provide insights into a number
of problematic issues.

Also, check here ( www.systemsc.com/tests.htm ) for insights into
what chips really do, i.e. advance the timing beyond what the
911 engine should have.

The chip results & problematic issues occur just like when 911SC owners
loosened their distributors and readjusted them so the timing was advanced
a few degrees:

1. the idle improved
2. the throttle response seemed to improve when accelerating
3. the engine pinged under various loads and during the hot weather
4. the engine required a higher octane to avoid pinging
5. the NOx level increased to a point of not passing an emission test
6. the engine ran hotter under heavy driving conditions, e.g. track use

Remember, a 911 3.2 engine is basically a 911SC engine with a longer stroke (74 vs 70mm),
a higher CR (9.5 vs 9.3), and an electronic engine management system versus a CIS system
with a CD ignition. Ask 911SC owners how many advance their ignitions beyond the factory spec,
or do a Pelican search as they have discussed this problematic issue.

The chip nathsayer slipped in in the middle of the night Kinda like the tooth fairy. Never even knew they were there. Wow, guess it is just the rain falling on our parade. I've got an SW chip absolutely no problems and great performance just like all the other reports that keep getting posted. Loren, give it a rest or provide us with your test results, remember the tests you did.

"I've got an SW chip absolutely no problems and great performance just like all the other reports that keep getting posted." - 88-diamondblue -

Just keep-on hoping, because you have more knowledge than the Porsche engineers,
all 241 Pelican posts. Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stick to giving advice on wheels and polish, or do some reading on engine design.

"I am considering buying new pistons & cylinders, specifically Mahle 10.3 pistons and cylinders for an 88 Carrera engine with Motronic." - 88-diamondblue -

Real smart for the street with U.S. present octane levels, a single plug, & no knock sensors.
A perfect example of engine design naivety!

"I installed the Magnacor wires after my originals started giving their very own engine compartment light show. Was pretty cool at night, just didn't do much for performance." - 88-diamondblue -

Another example of not thinking/understanding little/nothing about engine technology,
and then wasting money! So, now we're giving advice to fellow 3.2 owners, please.

I can´t shake a nagging feeling that Loren is on to something. His reasoning is plausible but the lack of hard data is not convincing. So far.

Bumpin' a thrilling debate..

It's obvious the SW chip enrichens the mixture to rich of peak EGT which is the same as saying richer than stoichiometric, so a simple seach on Google will tell you all you need to know how this condition will make your head temps run hotter and reduce the life of your engine.

I have all the data I need.

Did you go for a standard SW chip or did you get a customer chip mapped to a Dyno result?

88-diamondblue: WTF did you do to warrant a personal attack like the above? He actually took the time to review your previous posts, and then quote them? Scary.
