new shocks ordered
I just received the 101 projects book in the mail and sudenlly I feel strong.
The book is so straight forward that I think I'm going to tackle the shock change myself. Just ordered new bilsteins all around for my '88 turbo and will commence the change this coming weekend. I also enlisted the help of my 18 year old (about time he stop talking cars and actually started doing). It appears from my readings in the forum that the most difficult part of the process will be removing the front retaining pins. Any tips would be welcome. I'll take some pics and post my report. Hopefully I won't have to go crying to my wrenh to fix my blunders. You know how jealous they can get if anyone else touches their baby!!! Never mind that I'm just the owner of the car. LOL. Once I'm there, Is there any ohter maintenance work I should perform? The car has 64K miles on it. Thanks, Q.

in my opinion, the easiest way to deal with that pin is to use the correct sized punch. then just give it a good smack down.. i have never needed to drill one yet. i overkill when i comes to the size of the hammer too.
![]() two people on this job makes it easier. oh, dont overstretch and mess up your brake lines.

Buy a 'roll pin punch'.It is a punch with a little nipple on top which fits inside the top of the pin and acts as a guide to keep the punches shoulders (which do the actual driving) in place when you tap the pin out.I also prevents the pin from distorting as you knock it in or out. I Know NAPA sells them.

Please tell me that you verified that you have Bilstein struts before you ordered new inserts.
Other than that the job is pretty easy. You'll want an impact wrench if you can get your hands on it, and you'll want a breaker bar with a long pipe to put over the handle for the bottom shock bolt. I know this is in Wayne's book, but make sure you put the roll pin back in oriented correctly.

Yes, I checked the struts and they are green in color. I also queried the guy at pelican. Thanks for the advice guys.

All of the above is great advice, especially to make sure you have the right size punch. For the love of god don't make the same mistake I did this past weekend and get the wrong size punch that will break off inside the roll pin. I've got 2 or 3 chunks of punch inside there right now, and I think I've hit the point where it has to go into the wrench to finish the job. I just don't have the right tools.
Make sure you do searches on here and read up on getting the pin out. 30 minutes of reading might save you several hours of really frustrating work. Ask me how I know...
