Fabricating brake hard lines
Has anyone done this with stainless steel tubing and some sort of appropriate fittings? I would imaging its easy if you have the right size tubing and fitting, the question is what is the right size / spec?
Thanks! Brian |

Why work from scratch? Just measure your old line, buy one close to it at your LAPS along with a tubing bender, and bend to fit.

I found the correct stuff at a local Kragen (or similar) shop. Metric sizes and even the correct green color. Had them in 8", 10", 12", etc. That, and a 5.99 tubing bender does the trick....

SS is much harder to work with than steel. You have to get bendable and flareable tubing. Then you need a flaring tool that is capable of flaring SS.

Well, I have access to the tubing, so I guess that is why I was looking to go from scratch - I will look into all these options though, thanks. Does anyone know the exact sizes (OD or ID or wall thickness) of the lines recommended for a 911 or even the metric fitting size?
Thanks all!

The metric fitting is M10 x 1.0 The tubing size is 3/16 = ~4.75mm (actually 4.7625)
And be sure to measure the hex size of the fitting if you buy them via pre-fabbed bendable lines from the parts store. The ones I got from Pep BoyZ & Advance Auto are made by AGS and have 12mm hex fittings on them, while the lines I got from Murray's have 11mm hexes on them. The factory fittings from Porsche are 11mm, in case you want to keep all of you brake line fitting sizes consistent. A good trick for bending lines where a bending tool won't work, is to use a socket held in a vise.

http://www.classictube.com/search.asp#access Look for the "TUBING (Straight & Coils) & FITTINGS (Steel, Stainless, Brass) " in the above link and then click on the SEARCH box. I found this site to be pretty helpful in understanding the details of tubing and fittings http://www.fedhillusa.com/pages/709975/index.htm
