putting short shift in now wont go into anygear.

I was putting in a weltmeister short shift and when testing shift i went from 5th to reverse by accident now it only goes from 5th to reverse and it wont go into neutral or any other gear.

please help

No worries.
Did you tighten the coupler bolt? If you didn't get it tight enough the shifter rod will rotate and cause problems. Try starting over. Do you have any manuals on hand? If not, search here for details. I think the shift rod is just out of adjustment. The shift rod coming out of the thrans needs to be turned by hand to put it into first gear. You can then put this shifter itself in the first gear position. Tighten the coupler bolt and check your gears.
This is a 915 tranny, right?

this is what is happening i didnt even mess with the coupler before i saw i didnt have any gears.

i can put it in 5th and revers only when i yank it out of 5th when clutch is slightly aplied it goes right into revers no neutral at all.

i started over put oem old shift in same problem undid coupler it dousnt want to turn clock wise at all which is the 1 through 4 spectrum.

what do i do

favrok01 03-19-2006 12:30 PM

how do i turn it clock wise to put in to first? it is a cross shape but nothing to clamp on to.

favrok01 03-19-2006 12:31 PM

going out to the car to try to put in first be back

Oh Haha 03-19-2006 12:33 PM

Well, we know it isn't serious so just step back and take a breath, grab a beverage and think about it. You didn't mess with the coupler so it has to be " in the shifter". Is the ball on the end of the shifter going into the ball cup bushing? Check it out.
That is the only connection that you could have missed at this point.

favrok01 03-19-2006 12:47 PM

i put the old one back in. so i didnt miss that. i can see the shifter in the cup trying to move the linkege but it wont go. i disconected everything and from the t conecter in back put a ajustable in the t and it wont move just goes up and down 5th to reverse. i think something got ****ed becouse neutral is just gone so i cant move it anywhere even with the clutch pushed in.

favrok01 03-19-2006 12:50 PM

i was watching the lock out spring tab work and was playing with the 5th to revers seeing how cool the desighn was to stop this and then suddenly i didnt move it right and the lock out didnt stop it and it went into revers with a little kind of tendon pop sensation and it has been broken ever since

Oh Haha 03-19-2006 01:28 PM

Can you force the lever back into 5th?
Any way you caould take a picture and point out what you mean?

favrok01 03-19-2006 01:55 PM

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1142808813.jpg

it will move only in and out it wont move right to left any more

favrok01 03-19-2006 02:00 PM

i dont realyt have to force it into 5th it will go there just not anywear else.

Brian 162 03-19-2006 03:00 PM

Is it stuck in 5th gear even after you pull the shift lever out of 5th?

favrok01 03-19-2006 04:34 PM

no it goes straight to reverse from 5th with no neutral

Motorhead-45 03-19-2006 04:56 PM

Just to be clear...This all happened sitting in your garage/driveway right rather than going from 5th to Reverse while motoring down the road right? The problem you describe happens with the engine running or is this without starting the car?

For the no-nonsense no guessing answer you need to talk to this guy...resident guru

I'm out!!
It has to be something simple but I have no idea with out touching and feeling the gearbox. ( THAT sounded stupid.)
Myabe a fellow Pelican in NC could drop by and take a look at it?

favrok01 03-20-2006 03:20 AM

well thanks for your help i let it kick my ass and quit on it around 7. 6hrs to put a short shift in is a bit much.

i will give john walker a buzz

Oh Haha 03-20-2006 03:41 AM

I've been going over this in my head all night and come up with nothing.
Almost worth a road trip to NC to find out what the deal is.

favrok01 03-20-2006 06:58 AM

pha you drive that to help litle ol me and i will by you all the beer you can cary......... well **** if your going to do that ill buy a fidenza flywheel and ill have a engine drop party. i think i screwed up the gears somehow in the trany but unless ze germans made so us dumasses cant do that i think then i just paid eurowerks another 500 to drive my car

Motorhead-45 03-20-2006 07:48 AM

When you figure it all out please take a couple of minutes and post your findings.....I'm very curious as to what happened as I suspect many others are!

If you haven't already been here, the following link takes you to a pretty good post on rebuilding the tranny....lots of good photos to help understand what's in there.
