Has anyone seen this car?

I'd be interested if anyone can tell me about it. It's in Tracy, CA:

1987 911 Turbo

I'll have the money next week. But now I am sooooo confused. I can't decide what to get. I was originally looking at an 01 996 or 97 993 but It's hard to justify 35K on a used car. I've also looked at:

93 928 GTS- high 20s
94 968- high teens

Now, for the first time I'm considering a turbo.

I know this is a nice problem to have. But it's keeping me up at night trying to decide, and also worring about not getting a lemon. I'm trying to get a reliable daily driver that I don't have to work on every weekend, like my 944.

PPI, Armando.

I had a 3.3 Turbo that ate money faster than gasoline. In my case, the sins of the P.O. vere visited upon me when I discovered excessive endplay in the crank. You don't want to know what a 3.3 Turbo crank costs. I wish I didn't.

Plenty of people have had long and successful ownership experiences with 3.3 Turbos. Be one of them. Check those candidate cars thoroughly.

If I had the space, I would be taking a close look at that car. Have a thorough PPI done and then make up your mind. The car looks pretty stock which can be a good thing. You want to be wary when you find a highly modded turbo with few records or when the perfpormance parts are mismatched, I.E. big turbo, headers and stock intercooler. If properly maintained, it would be a bargain.
Just remember, with turbos there is no slipperly slope for the mod bug, just a steep cliff and a long fall.

The 930 has never had the reputation of being a "reliable daily driver." Don't get me wrong, the 930 is a fabulous car (and this one looks really clean) but given the complexity of the 930 platform the enormous cost of repairs and the fact that this one is almost 20 years old, it's just not -- in my opinion -- destined to be "a reliable daily driver" no matter what the results of the leakdown test and thorough PPI.

If you really have your heart set on a Porsche and still want "a reliable daily driver" look at the 993 series. With a little work, you should be able to find one in your price range. If you want to venture into other marques in your price range, both the Honda S2000 and the C5 vette have earned the reliable daily driver reputation. Just my 2 cents.

Your right Dave that's why I didn't consider it until I ran across this ad. My first choice was actually a 996 (new, less people that have worked on it). My second choice was the 993 (I've always wanted one since they came out). But they're just as much as the 996s. My third was the 968 (another car I've always admired).
I also never considered the 928 because of all the electrical problems they are known for.

If I eyes are correct, I saw this car several days right after I got mine. umm.. beautiful car, very lowed price. How come it's never sold? Maybe you should look a little more carefull.

Armando, I have really wanted a turbo for a long time too. I spent about 2 years looking and learning. Then, as I would get closer and closer to buying one, friends that owned one starting giving me advice about them. Here is what I learned.

I would not worry about reliability IF the car has been properly cared for or you are willing to get it in the proper shape and keep it there. Getting it there is probably more expensive than the difference between finding one with everything done and buying one on the cheap and fixing it.

The big issue as it has been told to me is that the 4-speed cars are not easy at all to drive around town as a daily driver. To do that you need a '89 with the 5-speed. So you are back to a high dollar car.

Finally, the mileage on that car is a concern. Turbos don't go 100k without having something done along the way: a top end at a minimum or a full rebuild. Paul Rodelo, for example, had his motor in for a top end with similiar miles and they found a spun bearing that was just about ready to start giving problems. So, "while he was in there" they did the bottom too. Can you say $$$$?

Hope this is somethat helpful. . .

Uhhh, am I missing something here? This is "that thread".

(I've never seen a post that links back to the same thread before...)

Car looks to be a deal. If I had more garage space I would be driving north to look at it.

I've made up my mind(for now). I will persue an '01 996. There are 2 for sale locally withing the mid 30s. I know it's not the popular choice on this forum but I'm looking for comfort while stuck in I95 traffic or waiting 2hrs for the Turnpike to reopen. I'm also looking for something I don't have to tinker with on weekends. I've been abandoning my track car because of working on other projects. I feel so guilty about it.
I'm getting rid of a 944S and I'm finishing up on my other 944na.
Now I'll be able to get back to work on the track car.

That car looks to have been detailed extensively. I see the signs of a hot water blaster removing paint on some underside areas. Many items are way cleaner than the tell tale signs of the shocks and front end. Either that, or it's had a new tranny intalled. Or both.

All in all, I think this car should be gone over carefully and a comprehensive PPI done. Especially since no records are available (None?) The seller has all of 2 posts.

This is why Pelican no longer allows posts in the FS section.

OH, oh! Does this mean I unknowingly found a loophole to the blocked replies?

Look at the Christmas lights hanging on the house. Either he was selling this car several months ago, or he leaves the lights on the house until April - either one is a red flag!

If that car is still available in 6 months I will buy it!!!!!!!!

Actually the wife agreed that after I've had my new job for a while I can spend $50k on anything I want.
250 hookers was my first thought, then images of 993s, 996s, Z06s ran through my head but I could get a car like this turbo and still have plenty of money left for hookers (just kidding).

I spoke with the owner. He said the nearest place for a PPI is about an hour away.

He has had it, if I recall correctly, since November of last year.
