Hayden

Indeed! Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, Hayden's got a thick binder of ideas that have yet to be developed. From what I've learned, only the projects that meet his very high expectations will ever see the light of day. I'm sure others would love to get their hands on his "cast-offs"!

It's going to be a challenge for me to meet his very high standards, but it will be great fun working with him and giving him feedback on ideas during the development process. In the beginning I will likely be contributing mostly as beta tester, giving a mechanic's view to Hayden on installation and usage, and offering suggestions to improve installation and service procedures.

I'm sure I'll have to earn my stripes in the engineering department, since Hayden is the one with the degree, and all the experience. But I think it will be a very good fit, with each of us having complementary strengths.

I was simply hoping that this thread might bring to light a niche' that needs filling that no one has yet thought of. Maybe something outside the transmission realm, but not into the I-pod dock/cupholder realm either.

"a niche that needs filling ... outside the transmission realm"

- I'd like to see some light wt. parts for the very rear of the car. The engine carrier is quite heavy for what it does, as one example. Another would be a light muffler made of Ti -- the new vette is doing this, MB is said to have some light wt. technology in their new mufflers, and the price of Ti is coming down substantially.

The other thing that begs to be done is a street capable set of Al A arms for the front suspension.

In general, it would be interesting to look at things that have already been engineered for light wt. in by other manfs. -- the Honda Insight and the 3rd gen. RX-7 come to mind -- to be adapted over to our cars. e.g. the seat technology that Mazda was playing with is rumored to be very light wt. The general trend to engineer for light wt. to gain fuel savings can also be exploited for performance purposes. That ought to be a profitable vein to mine in the coming years.

I asked about it in another thread, but nobody seems to have seen it yet.

A kit with machined adapter blocks and new bolts to push out a standard non-S Boxster caliper about an inch to fit bigger rotors for more brake torque and heat capacity.

Something that used a really standard easy to source rotor would be the best obviously.

One word:

Inconel. How about some headers made from Inconel?

The latest 911 mag has a Vintage Rally spec "RS" with a very interesting solution to chassis flex forward of the dash - kind of a 935 piece. Front susp mounting points to improve geometry could be added to this. Some kind of c/g "belly pan" to improve aero (downforce vs fuel improvement vs heat transfer). Second to the idea of lightweight parts in the rear - engine crossmember - headers - and chassis reinforcement kit. Nice fitting, stock look lightweight windows that work with regular trim.

And of course - the ultimate body repair "kit" - replicated RS lightweight steel panels.

I've had something in my head for some time now that is in this area of the car, but I won't go into any details. It's not exactly like what you're referring to, but in the front suspension crossmember area. It'll likely be one of my own pet projects on the side.

I wonder if you really could save much weight on the cross member part of the engine carrier and have it still hold up.

True.

I'd like to see more work on weight reduction towards the rear of the car.....there are so many things up front:

Battery, FG fenders, hood, plastic headlight lenses, bumper/valence

Let's see some trick stuff for the rear.

"cross member part of the engine carrier"

- Since 2 people mistook this, I better respond -- I'm not talking about the crossbar itself - there is not a lot to be saved there. I mean the engine carrier itself, not the crossbar. The engine carrier [#1 in diagram below] is the heavy steel thing that the crossbar bolts to. It, in turn bolts to the engine. There are threads of people cutting holes in theirs - but that lets dirt & etc. into the lower fan belt area.

Nothing against a cosmetic improvement to the cross bar - whether that is Al or Ti but I don't really see that as coming from Wevo due to the minimal functional improvement.

Added later:
- A frame might be the way to go on the engine carrier -- for small runs you could make one out of tubing and then cover with sheet metal or FG. A cast piece would work for larger runs - dunno if cast AL would hold up, but if just the fame were steel, it would save a lot in an important place.

Wish list:

1 Lightweight forged rocker arms with bearings on the cam surface.
2 Lightweight .035 wall thickness equal length headers in stainless with v band clamps for ease of swapping from street to track. (Inconel is way too expensive)
3 A 935 inspired shifter for those of us who are willing to deal with a rod going over the e brake.
4 A 914 inspired remote e brake
5 An updated pedal box with the capability to grow, i.e. start with stock and go to dual masters, hydrualic clutch, 956/962 style go pedal
6 A lightweight heater/fresh air box with ducted fans for interior air movement.
7 Hub adapters to go from 5 lug to centerlock, I think quite a few ppl would spring for that.
8 A knockoff of the porsche gt3 cup/r/rs/rsr steering wheel quick release. Its the most positive one I have fealt.
9 Seat mounting rails that lower the drivers/passengers seat to a desired height.
10 An integrated front adjustable monoball/strut bar mount kit, weld on of course.
11 A bolt on crash bar front and rear for later bumper cars running aftermarket bumpers.
12 A quick release system for rear engine lids. Maintains the stock latch but allows for total removal of rear decklid.
13 Something out of this world.
