915 g/box query
I have 2 SC's - both with 915 boxes - according to the ID plate below the LH trans coupling. But one box has an external oil cooler fitted - which plugs directly into the housing. The other box does not have a housing that would accept this cooler. Are they still both 915's. How come 2 different castings?

85/86 Euro Carrera 915s had a factory oil cooler - any chance you have one of these? Post the serial numbers from the bottom of the transmission and we can tell you exactly what you have. 915s were around from 72 to 86 and come in several different flavors.

Tranny coolers were an option on Euro Carreras. I have an '84 915 with that option.

rarly, I think they were actually standard equip. on those 84-86 RoW carreras.

915/67,69,72 used on ROW 911s from '84-'86 had the side cooler as standard.
Bruce Anderson once told me that some US cars sold in places like Texas had them as a special order item.

Hi Guys,
Many thanks - the g/box on my 82 SC looks exactly like that in the pic submitted by Brian. The numbers on the plate below the LH drive are 9151166130R. There are some other numbers higher up on the g/box housing itself - as opposed to the diff housing. But hard to read - still in car. Trying to sort some synchro parts for this - and make sure it is a 915 and not G50. Is there any chance the numbers quoted relate to the diff and not the g/box - or are they a paired item. If it has a hydrolic clutch it is a G50. Also no G50 had a cooler like that. Look on the very bottom center of the tranny, there is a rather stout block of aluminum ~1" wide by maybe 4" side to side. That is where you will find your type number. Either someone has added a cooler to your '82 tranny or swapped it out.
My box is a 915/67. Apparently it was standard on the early Euro Carreras('84-'86), I was told by 2 mechnics it was an option.

Many thanks Brian. Now that I know where to look, I can confirm it is a 915/, the next letter is a 7 but I cannot make the 2 nd one out.
Do these numbers make any difference for ordering parts - or are they all just 915's. Thanks Alan

You probably have a 915/72.
The gearing is different on some types. I'm not familiar enough with the innards to know what upgrades the factory may have done along the way. I'd bet 90% of the parts are identical for all 915s. Grady Clay, John Walker and a few others will know for certain.

9151166130R is a casting #
The US 915/68, 70, 73 used a different case and side cover and gearing than ROW 915/67, 69,72 but all the other parts are the same The big difference was the addition of the cooler pipe and pump inside the side cover ![]() ![]()

I can now order some synchro parts. Where would I access the gear ratios for US/ROW, and is the diff ratio different. Am considering racing the SC in question. Would be useful to know what gearing options are available. Alan
