Alternator Model?
Is there a way to figure out what kind of alternator I have on my car without having to pull out the fan?
I need to replace my Voltage Regulator and the current VR is a no name unit. I've read that the VR must be matched to the Alternator in order for it to function properly. Here's some pictures of the bad VR: Thanks.

Brandon,
That isn't any OEM Voltage regulator I've ever seen, i.e., it isn't Bosch or Motorola/Marchal! Remove the alternator nut and measure the shaft threads ... M14 x 1.5 = Bosch M16 x 1.00 = Motorola/Marchal

Thanks for your help.
I'll give that a try. Is the best way to get those measurements a micrometer?

Brandon,
It doesn't have to be a micrometer, any kind of caliper, or even a ruler will do ... if you eyeball it carefully, for the major diameter. For the thread pitch, you can use an M6 bolt with 10 mm head as a gauge ... if it matches, then the pitch is 1.0 mm. A CV-joint bolt is M10 x 1.5 ...

I took my '70 e on a 400 mile road trip over last weekend and a few miles before I got home my alt lamp started to glow, looks like I'll be into that this weekend, I'll see if I can get a pic to you of my VR, read the 101 book last night on alt replacement to get prepared -the local parts place lists a variety of amperage alternators for that year? Anybody out there know what a 70e would use has power windows, AC, sunroof, fog lights.

1970 E = 55 amp Motorola/Marchal.
Jerome, avoid the temptation to bump up the amperage unless you have a spare fan shroud handy, the later alternators don't fit in the early shrouds. If you don't mind spending some extra money you may consider the Bosch reproductions from AASE sales or this website, these are higher power and fit in the early shroud. Good luck!
