Engine Swap Guru's Please Help!

heys guys i really need some help and dawned on me to post here, what better resource than all you guys....? i was starting to stress about getting accurate info as I AM NOT ANYWHERE NEAR WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED A MECHANIC........ so i was trying to get some info and insight. so please chime in with the wealth of knowledge you guys have so im reaching out to:

grady clay
kurtv
tre
early s man
souk
tyson schmidt (especially)

or anyone else that can chime please feel free.

so here is the situation...

i have a 1974 911 coupe that made it a hair under 300K, it retired. so fellow pelican and SOCG member:

PKASSO

is helping me on getting a new engine. he has been SUPER...

we have a question, since i have the coveted 1974 i can put anything i want in my car without smog worries. PKASSO found a 83 3.0 that i want to put in my 74.

the question:

can this engine be put into my car pretty easily? is it a bold in?

i thought that all 3.0 will go into a 74 without any mods or complications and bolts right in. (please keep in mind i am not a mechanic and dont know crap)
i thought i heard stuffing a 3.2 into a early car requires some mods and is more involved.

can any of your guys please be kind enough to give details on putting a 3.0 into a 74 to replace a 2.7 maybe include the items in general terms that need to be done in getting that 3.0 into my 74!
in know TRE just put a 3.0 into a early car a few months ago.

PLEASE HELP!

thanks in advance for all your help

I don't know why the gurus haven't chimed in yet, maybe there are several reasons, one of which is that, although this is one of the easier swaps to do, it may not considered easy for "some one who is not a mechanic and doesn't know crap". How much help is your friend going to be? If he is going to be any help, he should know the answers to some of these questions.

I'm not trying to be critical in any way here, I know that folks might be willing to help out if they could get a handle on how much involvement they might be committing to in walking you through this....

I just thought I'd try to break the ice here.

I agree with Jim. This is one of the easier conversions. The devil is in the details.

You will want to swap the ’74 911 exhaust onto the ’82 engine.
Do you have the ’82 front oil cooler system or an original ’74?
What other mods are you contemplating?

This is a very desirable conversion and it can be perfectly correct with care. The goal is to have the result as if it were Factory original. That is reasonable to do.

Best,
Grady

Geezzzz FINALLY!...... wahhoo

im not doing anything in this process as i know my strengths are not as a mechanic although i did stay at a holiday inn express last night..... and yes your right jim, this more just for me to understand, at least in reading it.

PKASSO is a mechanic and his right hand guy is a long time porsche guy so i sure it is all handled and i trust these guys, i just wanted some details insight i guess for myself.

i am only looking for written help or info... not asking for anyone to get their hands dirty, i hope i didnt imply anything other than that but thanks for chiming in jim.

wow mr grady clay is that you? hehehe cool.

yes i have an original 74 and i will tell them to swap my exhaust to the 83 engine.... cool thanks.

i think the engine PKASSO has all the oil lines from the 83.

grady these are the things i kinda would like to know. what needs to happen in the swap specifically.

i have a BONE stock 1974 2.7 coupe.

swapping in the 3.0 what needs to happen, is there a brain/computer that needs to be added?

what kinds of mods needs to happen?

i am not interested in fancy stuff, i want the car to run and thats it.
its not going to be tracked, or raced, i just want to get the car back on the road.

thoughts?

If you have the US '83 3.0 engine, and it is all stock, it will have the lambda system (O2 sensor) equipment with it, unless someone has modified it. You will need to consider the wiring harness which connects the Lambda ECU (electronic control unit, usually mounted under the driver's seat), to the engine. As Grady says, the early exhaust from the '74 will be a HP improvement over the stock exhaust.

There may be some minor mods to the 14-pin connector in the engine compartment. Most of the guys who have done these mods can chime in with the changes required, including me. A check of the factory wiring diagrams will reveal the changes.

You will need a larger capacity fuel pump for the 3.0 liter, and moving the pump location to the front of the car from the rear would be a good idea.

Others may have something else I may have forgotten to mention.
