EFI - why has someone not done this?

I've been thinking( always dangerous). Why has someone not taken a mass produced EFI/engine management system say out of a GM six banger say a Grand Prix or some other car. Re-mapped the CPU and applied it to a 911 ? Seems like you could pick up the whole system from a junk yard for a song. Might have to change a few parts like injectors but you'd have a hardened proven system. Am I way off on my thinking ?

don't know about converting those, but there are several variants already out there...pelican member, tbitz, for one has his available. do a search under 'tbitz' and 'efi' and you'll see..if you're not already familiar..

oh ok thanks, it just seems to make more sense than a "heathkit" version from an electronics standpoint

The reason I wouldn't do that is cause the ecu isn't progamable like progamable aftermarket efi.

People on the forum have done that before, but it turns out to be a lot of work in the details. After all the work, you're probably better off w/ an off the shelf after market system (T-Bitz, Mega-Squirt, Motec, Tec3, etc) that can be optimized for performance if you're going to go through the trouble.

Just off the top of my head I'd think that the sensors involved with a water cooled car would be different from an air cooled 911. This alone would make reprogramming a less than straight foward effort.

someonedid do that, they ran a system from an 80's s10 on his 2.7. I remeber seeing here on PP a few years ago. Guy swears it was pretty easy

MS is better beacuse it allows continual re-programming. Using Ford/Buick/whatever OEM ECU would require EPROM-burner and opening of the box every time you want to change a parameter.

Ford EDIS is already used as it is.

Someone on the board installed a GM six cylinder EFI system. Using all the same sensors and fuel injectors I guess you wouldn''t need to reprogram. I beleive it ended up looking like a home made EFI system.

Megasquirt seems to be the economical way to go now.
