steering rack and TT rods help

in taking apart my rack looking for some clanking noise I noticed my t-tie rods don't have these spacers which would limit over all travel of the gear. Am I supose to have the spacers in the picture that would go between the threaded part of the rod and the actual grear of the rack. see pic.
below is my exlpoded view. Look at wayne's pic on page 152 of "101" it shows a spacer in there. lock to lock am i over extending without this spacer? and could this cause some clunking noise? I wish I could report a messed up rack and get a new one to solve my problems, but everything looks fine. thanks for any advice.

Jerry,

Im just wondering, the spacers that are on your steering column for shiming look an awful lot like the ones in the first picture! Could it possibly be that whoever installed the TT rods in the first place got that mixed up!!

Those spacers in the top photo (which appears to be from my rack rebuild post), definitely came with those turbo tie rods that I purchased from a local P-car supplier. I cannot say whether all turbo tie rod kits come with them but I think they do. Unless your clanking noise only happens at "full travel", I do not think they could possibly have anything to do with it. Without the spacer, you will obviously have a little less thread engagement at your tie rod end adjusters. I would hope you have at least 1.5 times the thread diameter of engagement to be safe.

I see what you're saying about the ends, hope you don't mind my steeling of your pic.
after some more reading, I see that wayne says this on page 152

"if the tie rod bottoms out when screwed into the steering rack, make sure that you use the spacer between the tie rod and the rack. Test fit the entire assembly beforehand and make sure that if you don't use the spacer, the tie rod is securely mounted to the end of the rack."
I take this to mean that if the thread bottoms out with thread still exposed then you need the spacer. If it screws in flush with the rack then you don't need it, unless you come up short on the end side for desired toe.
anyway, I'm leaning towords putting it back the way I found it, except cleaner, with new fuel lines in the tunnel

The quote from Wayne sounds correct and makes sense. Did you figure out where your noise was coming from?

I recently upgraded to the t-tie rods on my n/a Carrera. I definitely needed the spacers, tried without but the rod did not feel secured. Much more snug (tight) fit with the spacers.

I believe the spacer is also there to help prevent/reduce axial loads on the threaded section.
