advice needed for REAR fender cutting / rolling lug nut with 1" spacer question There is a price I'm paying for the spacers. The red arrows show the fender cutting into my tires. Good thing is that I was planning on replacing them soon. Bad thing is that I don't know what the new tires will do. Looking into a) rolling the rear fenders more or b) getting rid of the 1" adapters and getting 3/4" ones. BEFORE: ![]() ![]()

In my opinion, you've pushed things out way too far -- even judging only by looks. In your shoes, I'd sell the adapters and get half inch spacers (and longer lugs). Judging by the pictures, I think 3/4 inch would still put you out too far.
Even if you got the wheels to clear the lips, you're going to have contact about an inch up into the fender when you hit a very big bump at speed, or do a Driver's Ed event or Autocross.

Thanks for the reply. Tomorrow morning I am going to call the place where I bought the adapters and see if they will refund or exchange for a smaller size.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing with the 3/4" width. The tires I have now are old Kumho 712s and the new ones will be Yokos ES100s. I think the Yokos are more squarish at the tread/sidewall area, which would almost guarantee inner fender rub. The tire rub/cuts that you see on the pics don't go around the whole circumference of the tire, and I wasn't driving very hard. I suspect that it happened when I turned into a steep driveway at a slightly higher than normal speed. All this heartache for the look of 9" Fuchs... ![]()

Won't a little neg camber help clear the fender?

"All this heartache for the look of 9" Fuchs..."
Even 9" Fuchs don't sit this far outboard. I'd follow Jack's suggestion and reduce the width of the spacer. Even if the tire barely clears the lip, it'll hit the underside of the fender. MHO, Sherwood |

Already have -2.4 degrees on the rears. Don't want to go any less.
In the process of returning the 1" adapters. Will stay with 245/45s but will go with 3/4" or less spacers.

IMHO.... I seriously doubt you have as much as -2.4 degrees neg camber on the driver side rear.....
Did you mention what Fuchs rear width you're using ?( If not...shame). However, an 89 will likely come from the factory with 8", but shame on me ( also) for assuming you're running factory rear Fuchs. May not be the case.... I used 21 mm spacers to push out a 7" Fuch on the rear of my 85 Carrera...and it looks plenty maxed out to me ( well, there is a "little" more room left), while still getting good, unhindered suspension movement. Also running neg - 2.1 degrees rear camber. If you're using 1" spacers ( 25-26 mm) PLUS an 8" rear wheel ( there are two different offset 8"..if so...which one ??).....then it would come as no surprise as the the excessive "push out" you have. Some guys "do" run 9" Fuchs on the back, but I would guess with "real" neg camber and no spacer. The tire brand/model also has a profound effect. I've seen some 225's that are wider than some cataloged 245's.... -Wil

Wil-
The last time I had the car aligned was about 5 years ago, and I was told it was at -2.4. It might be time to get it aligned again. I'm not sure if I mentioned the Fuchs size in my other posts; yes, I have 911 8" in the rears (don't know the offset; it's the factory 8" that came on the 89). I will be looking for 21mm or less spacers/adapters. FYI, a while back I have tried a friend's 9" Fuchs with (I think) 255s and they fit without a problem. So from my guestimate I thought 1" spacers and my (presumed) negative camber would fit. I was wrong. Thanks for the detailed inquiry. BTW, were you an engineer in a former life? Brian

FWIW, the difference between 8 and 9" fuchs is mostly on the inside, which is why 9" fuchs have no rear fender clearance issues on SC/RS flares.

Thanks, Sherwood. Knowing that makes me kick myself about the look of 9" Fuchs. I should have asked for advice before buying the 1" spacers...
That's what I get for shooting from the hip... On a brighter note, I hope to be receiving 19mm (3/4") spacers and longer studs in the next week or so. (I hope Jack isn't right that they still will be too wide). If I can't return the 1" adapters, you'll see them on the Parts Forum. Brian

I rarely disagree with Jack, but I think 3/4 spacers will be just fine, particularly if you don't get Dunlop tires, which are some of the widest out there. I have seen a significant real-world difference in the width of 225's from different manuf, and the Dunlops were the widest of all. I liked that about them, but they also seemed to wear out the fastest, with the SP5000's wearing better than the 8000's (as expected, but the 8000's were dismal on the rear). I had occassional rubbing on the back with the 8000's, and no rubbing ever with the same size BFG G-Force.

The difference between where the outer edge on a 9" Fuchs sits and where the outer edge of an 8" Fuchs is 9.5mm sligthly less than .5"
I wouldn't want any spacers on mine but if you must, .5" max

I'll be testing the fender-rub-tire-cutting-paint-bubbling gods again with the 19mm or 3/4" spacers.
Who knows, I may have TWO sets to sell on Pelican in the next few weeks... I'm basically just burning my dollar bills as time goes on...

And, I think the car looked fine before. Did you know you are effectively changing your spring rate by moving the wheels out? That's one of the purposes of spacers as well as a change in the suspension geometry. You now have a softer rear potentially exacerbating the problem. |

Thanks for the clarification, Milt.
After reading previous threads (and especially Wil Ferch's comment about being set straight), I did my best to say that what I have now are 1" adapters. What I hope to have soon are 19mm spacers with longer studs. I couldn't find any adapters less than 1" wide. I apologize to all if there was a miscommunication... I put both words in for the sake of searches that will be done in the future, because up until recently, I didn't know the difference (hey, I'm only a 3-month old member to this forum!). This forum has increased my everyday knowledge of my car such that I have stopped looking for a 993 (a lot of electronics) and will stick with the 3.2 until it dies, or if this website goes under!
