just bought 71 911T

Where do I start?? I am not mechanically inclined. The car has the original rubber.
It probably needs fresh battaries too. Any hints??

If the car needs new batteries, get the Optima batteries out of Excellence. They are maintenance free and will not rust out the battery boxes. I am sure that the rubber can be taken care of through Pelican Parts. The guys are a great source of knowledge and they have all the parts you would need to take care of your car.

Mechanically, these cars are not too hard to work on. Don't get flustered and be very methodical and they are great fun to work on. You will get a great sense of satisfaction when you work on your car. Get the Haynes book and if I remember correctly, Pelican has the original parts book available.

I bought a 1970 911T that had been in storage for a long period (7yrs). The car had not been properly prepared for storage and there were multiple problems all related to the fuel turning to varnish. Just to get the engine running (to find out it was trashed) I had to have the carbs done, the fuel pump, the gas tank removed and cleaned, and a minor tune. Dependent on the condition of your car depends on where you should start and how mechanical you need to be. I've left all of the real mechanical stuff to the pros.

The optima battery is an excellent idea, but don't buy one through automotion. I believe they charge almost $200 + shipping. You can find them lots of places (including the back of Porsche Panorama) for $120ish + shipping. You want the "red" one, not the yellow one. Also, a good place to buy the battery mount is AJ-USA. I'm not sure if Pelican sells a mount for the battery or not. Good luck!

I have to agree with Ken regarding long storage periods and how the car was prepared. In my haste, I never asked you if the car was running. If it has not been run for quite some time, take a lesson from Ken. His was and is a terrible story, but worth using as an example. I hope that Ken's car is serving him well, now that he has done the work. Good luck with your car.

Thanks for all the information guys!! The car has been stored in a barn ( I'm not kidding ) since last december. I have not attempted to contact the original owner yet. I have driven the car about 200 miles over the last two weeks. It starts on the first pull every time, but a couple of times i stalled it and had to get a jump. I found a place with two optimas in stock for $140 each near where I work. What's the difference in color represent? These batteries are the last two he has in stock and he made a comment about not stocking them anymore because he sold so few. Should I worry about them having sat around for a while?? When I said the rubber was old I meant it is sitting on the original tires
(englebert Max I 165 SR 15). any recommendations on replacing them? my car has chrome plates steel wheels with logo center caps. Are these original?? The car really feels like it wants to go but i have been afraid the exceed 60 because of the tires.

As I recall, Optimas come in two amp. ratings.
Colors are red and yellow with red being the good one. Sitting around doesn't bother them, they hold their charge MUCH better than an acid cell.
Get hold of the boys at Pelican. I believe there is a dual battery setup available for your car. If not, they can sell you a conversion kit.

Chrome wheels eh? Most of those have disappeared. If they are in good shape, they're worth some bucks. Replace those tires, change the oil, then take that sucker out and run the crap out of it.
If it don't blow, you have a good car.
