2.0 6cl- need help with noise please.
I here a clunking sound when i put drag or force on the engine, as I speed up. I have put new piston rings, resat valves, rechecked valve timing.
I also have mechanical chain tensioners not hydrolic. cant fig. it out. could it be the distributer? Any info would be great help. Again it only happens when I'm exelerating. |

You never say what year the car is. Also, what makes you think that the noise is coming from the engine? Did you check the Lobro joints (transaxles) or the wheel bearings? Can you put the car up on a lift and check the bearings and transmission (mountings)? Did you change the motor mounts when the engine was out for a rebuild? Any of these things can make a clonking noise if they are not right.

SORRY. ITS A 1970 914/6 WITH A 2.0 6 AND I KNOW THE SOUND IS COMING FROM THE MOTOR BECAUSE I HAVE OPENED UP A WHOLE THROUGH THE FIRE WALL SO ITS EASIER TO ACESS, I CAN HEAR IT CLEARLY COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. THANK YOU.

Mechanical noise, especially when associated with metal type sounds can be misleading, but is it possible that when you put the engine and transmission back together the clutch/bellhousing assembly weren't lined up correctly? The sound might still be from another source and I would still suggest getting the car up on jack stands and checking if the noise is really coming from the engine. I experienced a horrible noise that took quite a long time to issolate and it turned out to be a failure in the LSD. I also had one Porsche where, upon acceleration there was a very loud clunking sound. It turned out to be a halfshaft that went bad, but it did, at times, sounded like it was coming from the engine.
