Boosting 2.7 Performance

I'm in the process of having my 2.7 rebuilt Everything I've read so far states that CIS Fuel injection is basicly bullet proof, but that carbs are the only way to acheive a substancial HP gain above that achieved by backdating the exhaust.
The engine is torn down and I'm debating between a standard "stock" rebuild" or going more agressive: cams, head porting, carbs. ect. This car won't be an everyday driver...but isn't intended to be a pure track car either. Would moving away from CIS be a mistake regarding reliability ? Are there aftermarket fuel injections systems in the 2K price range that would offer me the same HP benifits ? I've considered upgrading to a 3.0 or 3.2, but i felt i could build my 2.7 to meet or exceed the HP of these engines for the same $$...or less. then buying a $4500 used 3.0 or 3.2 and be faced with a rebuild anyway.
Any insight is appreciated !

Pick up a copy of "911 Performance" by Bruce Andersen. He has a lot of experience in that arena.

NJJim,
Nothing to add, but I would like to know what you decide, as I have a 2.7 I am going to rebuild this coming spring (I need the garage right now). I too am looking for ways to boost performance, without modifying the engine too much (bolt on hp..)
Keep me posted, and good luck with your rebuild!

I have read through Bruce Anderson's suggestions. He's pretty clear on getting back to carbs for true performance on the 2.7. I just thought their might be a fuel injection system out there that would provide the same type advantages while not blowing the chance of me ever passing emmisions again !

Craig, I'll let you know the end result regarding HP.

Don't add carbs without modifying the cam profile.... http://www.webcaminc.com/
These guys make regrinds for 2.7s and have many different profiles. Pelican sells new ones. I used the 964 cams on my 3.0...but kept the CIS.

Webers will improve throttle responce but give away fuel mileage and reliability. They also run more rich than CIS so passing a smog test would be tough. If you live in the midwest you have to tune them seasonally. Other than SSIs there isn't much out there for < $2000 that will significantly increase HP, believe me I've looked hard. mikez - regarding the 3.0L CIS with 964 Webcams, how much did this help? I have been entertaining the idea of a cam swap.
