964 engine mods?
Did a search. Maybe I'm using the wrong keywords as I have to believe there's a lot of info on this. If someone can steer me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
But the question remains for those who know-what are the usual ways to increase HP on a 964? I've heard of replacing the primary muffler and secondary muffler with straight pipes, cat by pass, maf, chips, K&N, H&R/Bilsteins, etc. I don't want the car to be loud so from what I've read, the cat will stay as well as the secondary muff. I don't even have the car and I'm already thinking parts! ![]() However, bumping my car up from 250 HP closer to 275 or more is certainly intrigueing. I'm pretty sure the first mod I'll do is the springs and shocks. My few rides in 964s have obviously left me impressed, but I feel firming up the suspension is in order. Also a short shift kit will be a big improvement as well as a Pole Position seat. These changes I'm already set to do. Now for some more HP! |

Bob:
For 964's: 1) Pull the engine undertray (if that hasn't been done) 2) Make sure the distributor has a vent kit and the drive belt has been replaced in the last 50K miles. 3) Install either H&R springs/Bilstein HD's or Bilstein PSS-9 adjustable coilovers for a much needed suspension upgrade. You can add adjustable swaybars and a strut tower brace for effect. 4) Use the Carrera RS factory shifter. 5) Recaro's to suit,.. ![]() 6) Install a GOOD chip; a bad one can cost you big money. 7) Leave the K&N's to the Honda crowd, use the factory airbox and paper filter. 8) MAFS kits are only as good as their software. Most run worse than the stock airflow meter. Do your homework. 9) Lose the secondary muffler for some additional upper-end power. 10) Think seriously about close-ratio gears; thats a MUCH bigger bang-for-the-buck over engine modifications, hands-down. Hope this helps,

I agree. The beauty of a 964 motor is in not modifying it. It's a great, reliable motor out of the box. In your shoes, I'd talk to Steve Wong about a chip (www.911chips.com), and check out your smog obligations before you start throwing out your exhaust components.
Getting more power out of a 964 motor makes sense when you've got to rebuild it anyway. Outside of that, you're talking about lots of cash for not too much gain. In my opinion, it's better to learn to track it so you can get the bragging rights from beating cars with much more hp.

Steve-I pretty much have 1-5 on your list in the works. I'm having a PPI done Thursday. If all is well, I'll have them hand me the cover and toss it in back of my Yukon. I've heard from others that the gearing sucks. Approx how much should one expect to spend remedying that?
Jack-No doubt the biggest improvement required is in the driver's skill department. I'm working on that too. Hopefully soon I can change my handle to "Sorta-SLO-BOB". ![]() |

Depending on the condition of the transmission's innards, expect to pay anywhere from $ 5K to 8K for a rebuild with new close-ratio 2nd thru 5th gears and an LSD (which REALLY helps on the track). If this car will not see much road work, I'd also consider the RS lightweight flywheel and clutch kit.
