anyone seen a 911 engine mounted in the front of something?

i recall seeing a 944 online that someone converted to 911 power, but i'm thinking street rod application. maybe carve the bellhousing off a 915 diff housing to use the stock clutch and starter, then adapt a S-10 5 speed top loader trans to that for rear wheel drive. a big oil cooler behind the grille shell for cooling, etc. might be pretty cool. the wheels are turning in my head.

Interesting idea (although if it were me, I'd shoehorn it into a Corvette, come up with a creative name like, maybe, Renegade 6 and post lots of threads on vettesforever.com explaining how much better it is than the factory small block Chevy setup .... ). There are/were quite a few 'Midget' dirt track racers that have a 911 motor mounted in front with RWD. Not sure how they connect it all up though! Maybe throwing it in the backseat of a 944 would be a better way to go.

I have heard of a 911 powered Lotus 7. Not sure what trans was used though.

Seems like a natural application to me. Air cooled, dependable, ample horse power, loves to operate in higher rpm ranges. I don't see why it isn't done more often.

You might have a little problem getting front wheels to pivot enough for a decent turning radius. (Depending, of course on final engine placement, track and wheel width.)

I think it fits in a seven because the engine is in a front-mid configuration and thus is far enough back to allow for steering.

I've seen pictures of a Saab with a front-mounted 911 engine.

Seems like someone on this board from Finland or Sweden was putting a 911 engine in a Saab, Volvo or something????

i think that was the 944 i mentioned. i was thinking open hood street rod, roadster body of some sort, no fenders, rat rod style. guess i'll have to figure it out.

Wasn't there a dual engine...front and rear open wheel racer?

I remember seeing that car in Hot Rod magazine when I was 14 or 15. It was pretty sweet.

In some ways I'd like to mount the 928 engine in one of my old 50's F100s but am scared to hell of the 928 electrical demons...
