How do you backdate the heater?

I have seen many pictures from people that have done it but what exactly is involveds in backdating the heater? I think it drastically improves the look of the engine bay.

What size is that hose that goes from the side of the alternator down to the HE on the left side? Doug

So it looks like you just pull the blower and all associated hoses and then find some pieces that mount to the sides of the fan. At that point you just run the hoses directly into the heat exchangers and it works fine. Is this about correct?

Ben, no changes required to the stock h/e on my 3.2. Some reason why it isn't that simple w/ stock SC h/e's?

SSI's are aftermarket stainless steel heat exchnangers that are generally consideredto be the best street exhaust on the market. Other brands of stainless steel heat exchangers are on the market, notably Dansk and others but SSI's are generally considered the gold standard. By the way, they are copies of the early factory heat exchangers but (obviously) made out of stainless so they last essentially forever. Also you should know there are (at least) two versions; thin flange and thick flange. I am not certain the year cut over from one type to the other - someone will chime in and advise you here.

What year cars and motors can I get the heater parts that mount to the fan? I keep seeing people with pictures of them but they never say what car they got them from.

pre 75 cars have all the heater back date stuff. I am sure the back dated heat will work with the carrera and sc stock exchangers but more messing around IMO

and if you really want to get into it and remove the blower and fresh air induction in the front to have just alt fan powered defrost, you need about 8' of it. that will cover from the fan sides to the heat exchangers and from the outlets in the inner rockers in the footwells to the defrost vents.

Here's a shot of my 3.2. Was not taken for the heater hose backdate, but I think it shows enough.

Hi Slodave, so its just the left side that you hooked up the hose to? nothing on the right side for the 3.2? the reason why i'm interested in this is because of the potential hp gain. i'm contemplating whether i should install a header system/muffler or do the backdating using pre 74 HE. i'm not really particular on how the engine bay will look. but more interested in any power gains?? any thoughts?? ~onsse

A heater backdate will not do anything for the power. Don't waste your money on a pre 74 system. The stock Carrera HE are fine. Replace the cat with a bypass and get a good sport muffler and you will get results that are almost as good as headers and still have heat. Do a search or look up Brian Anderson's book on 911 mods. Unless your engine has had substantial mods such as Carbs or cams, the stock exhaust system is more than capable. Porsche engineers didn't leave much on the table. Ben
