In our local Porsche club, one of the owners also has a bug with a VW transporter engine (somewhat tweaked). At a hillclimb event recently he was very quick, i.e faster than most of the Turbos and GT3s!

I had a 1600 Super in a 58 beetle. It too ran like a scalded cat. With the stock brakes, it also stopped about as well as a scalded cat would.

I used to have a single port 67 Ghia. Wished I'd owned it ten years earlier. It was a ball to drive. I'd love to drive that Ghia.

Don't think so... I know he put a hopped-up Porsche 356 motor in the back of a VW cab.

He got a surprise the first time he drove it and decided he'd better put 356 brakes on the car also.

The 911 (and Corvair - more common) engines in a beetle require extending the bodywork a fair amount.

I've got an old photo of Bill Rutan siting in the Special at the Mt. Washington Hill Climb. I'll scan and post.

How about a 3,2 mounted mid-engine with a 944 trans and rear suspension in a transporter.
This is an amazing build. Porsche Powered Mid-Engine Double Cab

The 911 bug I read about in the early 80's used a 914 chassis with a 2.7rs motor and a super beetle body cut length wise to fit the chassis. My vision was to use one of the aftermarket tube chassis's that fit the stock body (I had a '57 oval window shell at the time) and use a 911 motor.
I got out of bugs and moved into crewcabs. After reading about Porsche putting 3.2's in the Vanagons (B32) I pursuit that approach. Over the last 14 yrs I've run a few different 911's in my '68 crewcab. Started with a '73E 2.4 carb motor, moved to a stock '86 3.2, then converted that to 46mm pmo's, Electromotive ignition and a few other add ons. A few years ago I got the bright idea to stuff a stock 3.0 turbo motor in there. That morphed into a modded 3.3 with about 400 h.p. I used a stock '73 trans with the 2.4, a '84 trans with a 7:31 and short 5th with the 3.2. The trans was rebuilt and beefed up, and the 7:31 replaced with a 8:31 by Wevo. Fun stuff!
With the dramatic price rise of Porsche parts, the days of 911's into VW's is pretty much over.

This is probably the ultimate sleeper. The transmission is from a 911, spyder brakes are at all corners, the engine is the 1700cc 547/5 flat four (same as the Elva Porsche). The fenders, door skins, engine lid, front trunk lid, running boards and bumpers
are all aluminum. They were done by Troutman and Barnes.

The car is a part of the Collier Collection in Naples FL

I remember seeing a video on the Ghia flying down the Autobahn. There was an article in VW World I think. I have it and could dig it out of a box. Tonnes of hours in it for the rear subframe and suspension carrier. Killer build tho.

Paul Newman.

As I recall the actor Paul Newman was "tooling" around
Malibu in a green Porsche powered bug.

At one point, many years ago, I seriously considered putting a 911 motor in my Baja bug.

Truth is my 2,1l T1 has more power than I ever need in a 1500 lb car. And I don't have an extra 150 lbs hanging off the back, nor do I have to wait to 4 thousand RPM to get any real power.

Check out the VW bug with RX-7 engine that appeared on Leno's garage, Aug 1st episode. Apparently, it's a wolf in sheep's clothing and has surprised more than a few sports cars.

This topic is probably more thoroughly discussed at the VW site: thesamba.com
