Muffler enhancement or crazy idea
While driving back from the remodel (money pit) with the wife and kids in the car it became more evident, especially with my wife's scrunched up nose, that my car - with a hot rod 3.4 - with 964 headers and a magnaflow exhaust is pretty noisy.
I guess I'm tiring too of the boy racer exhaust so thinking of a low cost solution. I do have a low cost guy that can weld up exhaust stuff for me - last one cost me ~100 for him to custom make up the magnaflow. So, the bottom pipes are pretty straight - it got me thinking that I may be able to add a couple of tube mufflers - something like this... to here(this is the shortest side) ![]() with a similiar one on the other side? Do you think this would reasonably quiet things down? Wish Ben made a dual out - out the sides for us folks with B & B Headers

You think straight through mufflers will help
![]() My neighbours started complaining because I have straight through mufflers and its quite loud. Well, gotta see what i can do next winter.

Hi Jeremy,
Yes, it will certainly help. In the UK many people that don't have a std exhaust have to bolt on little mufflers like this to get thru the static noise tests we have at many UK tracks. We just take off the tail pipe trim and bolt them straight on the end of the pipe. The most commonly used mufflers are little straight thru mufflers as they have to be light and they take between 1 and 2db off the static level measured at 45 degrees, 1 metre from the tailpipe at 3/4 max revs. This doesn't sound like much but it is certainly enough to make a difference inside and out. I don't have any pictures but the mufflers used are like the little stinger mufflers that Ben/M&K/Pelican sell. Incidentally, I am having Ben make just such a muffler for me now so I can cap one side and bolt-on a second muffler on the other so I can get back on the tracks I am too noisy for. RB |

Whats wrong, your wife and you don't like arriving with hearing loss and a dull ringing in your ears? I like mine, but then again its usually for only 25 minutes at a time at the track. You might want to go with a different muffler entirely since the Mag has absolutely no restricitions.

Is that a dissipative tube muffler, or just a straight pipe? (does it have sound absorbing material in it)?
If it is dissipative, it will quiet it down, but mainly in the higher frequencies, and you will get more back pressure as well from the loss of free area.

Pick a muffler that has sound attenuating (nice word, eh?) material in it like Matt said.
Dynomax mufflers are one brand I know of that will have that stuff in them. http://www.dynomax.com/ecat/Dynomax2006.pdf

Jeremy,
I agree with Facey. Talk to Ben. The set up that you describe will be LAS (Loud as *****). Don FYI - I Just had German Tech fix my exhaust with an Eibell modified factory muffler. Looks stock but growels like a sport muffler. Joe says it sounds great but I haven't heard it yet. The car is sitting down there and I simply have not had time to pick it up. It's driving me crazy.

I used a stainless resonator from Voracious Motorsport (Vertex's ricer arm) to quiet down the overly loud exhaust that came w/ my turbo kit-it took the edge off a bit. Its a straight thru piece, available in a couple lengths and diameters.

I went through the same phase, I went back to a stock bannana on my SSIs but I am tired of that noise now as well. Would like to find a cheap, lite, less restrictive alternative....the holy grail. I want ro get one of Bens but I fear it would be too loud after a while. I am turning into a wuss!

I think Ben can make you a quiter version. I also have a Dansk two in two out sport muffler. Very nice construction and look but not loud enough. You might want to consider one of these. If 1 is stock quiet and 10 is open headers, the Dansk is probably a 4. I like about a 7. Don

yeah, I liked the dual out dansk sport I had on it, fine for a cabriolet with a euro premuffler. A little deeper growl, nice wail at the top - but the combination of 964 headers and the free flowing magnaflow is loud! Fine for the track - but gets pretty buzzy around town. You know it's too loud when my 6 year old son complains.

Before you spend a lot of money experimenting give this a try - take off those large tailpipes. If that does not work slide on a couple of reducers in their place.
The reduction should be minimal, say from a 2.25" down to a 2". What you have now looks like it might creat a megaphone affect.

Rarly could you slide a smaller tube inside and experiment? Same with the other straight through, could you rig it up to "try" it hanging off the end before investing in welding. Or are there other variables that come into play when the changes are not in the same place as the final design.

You can slide a pipe into the existing ONLY if it extends past the existing tail pipe and gives the bell no chance to act as a megaphone. The only trouble with that is it won't sound exactly the same due to the added length.

Cheap + dirty = Supertrapp. Weld a plate to the end and start adding some discs...That'll help tame it a bit.

Thats right I rememeber when I trimmed a few inches off my 2 in 2 out it totally changed the sound. Much louder. Amazing how much "science/art" goes into mufflers
