Angry M&K Muffler Install Questions

Hello Everyone-

88 911

So I'm trying to remove my stock muffler to install the new M&K. I was trying the no jack method and can't seem to understand how the heck this can actually be possible- it seems tricky enough as it is to unscrew the two top bolts as the leverage is extremely limited AND even with an elbow offset on the wrench the back of the wrench hits the piping that turns into the stock muffler. Yes- I can get the bottom bolt and nut off just fine but will not actually remove it until I know that I can remove the the two top bolts lest something else rears its ugly head.

Is this a situation where if you have the car jacked up you can remove the muffler in 10 minutes but when you are on your back you might as well wish you are Plasticman to contort into the necessary position to get the right tool angle?

Please will someone give me a step by step or am I just too incapable to do this. btw- I used to do all my own work on a classic mustang so I know how to use tools.

THoughts anyone- is it significantly easier when the car is jacked up??? Do I need to remove the rear valance under the bumper (don't see why I should but at this point I'm willing to consider the not so obvious).

HELP ME before I descend into lunacy. . . How do I remove those two top bolts on the flange connecting the Muffler to the Catalytic converter flange?

Sometimes I love to work on cars and sometimes I can just kick the s**t out of the tires!!!

Thanks for you help y'all

Thanks

I can't imagine removing the muffler without jacking up the back end of the car. It will be sooooooo much easier to work under there with a few feet of clearance. You should be able to access all of the muffler connections once you can get underneath. Just be ready for the weight of the factory muffler; it's about 3 times the weight of the M&K.

I'm sure the muffler is great- once I get it on. But I agree with you- I can't imagine removing the muffler without jacking up the back end of the car. Don't really know why anyone would say this though...

Oops. I read your post wrong. Thought you were trying to do this without lifting the car.

Pulling the rear valence really won't help. A crows foot just might do the trick.

Dailydriven-

The problem I'm having is that I can get enough leverage with the car on the ground to loosen the two top bolts and regardless there is not enough rotation clearance for the socket ratchet or a wrench in order to loosen the bolts once I do in fact break the "death grip" the bolts have on the flanges (which doesn't seem possible as a result of the lack of rotation clearance).

I want to do this myself but damn- I'm not going to break my back in the process.
