Twisty shifter -- need help

All of a sudden, the gear shifter on my 73.5 911T has started to twist inside the casing that it fits in. For example, when I push it over to the right to get into R or fifth, the top end of the shifter will spin counter-clockwise a bit, or pulling it toward me to downshift into second it will spin clockwise a little.

Anybody seen this problem? Any suggested fixes?

Thanks.

Ken

The factory epoxy has let go.

Clean well and epoxy it back for another 30 years of service, or remove, refurbish, and weld if you want a more permanent fix.

Thanks James. When I re-align the shifter, does the "clip" (i.e. the bent piece of metal on the right side that engages the reverse lock-out) point to the exact right center? Any good way to get that alignment straight?

If you're going to re-epoxy it, I suggest JB Weld. That stuff is bulletproof!

With the shift lever in fifth or reverse, the bent tab on the shift lever should fit flush against each carrier plate tab. Before welding or using epoxy, place reference marks on the lever parts so it goes back together correctly.

Thanks Sherwood, for the help and for posting the diagram. I'll take a shot at it this weekend.
