Origin of "No Substitute"

What's the origin for the slogan: "Porsche. There is no substitute."

I'm too young to recall this from before Tom Cruise's line in Risky Business. And a search didn't turn up an answer, either.

Probably coined by some marketing weenie...

BMW, The Ultimate Driving Machine

Chevrolet, The Hearbeat of America

Ford, Built Ford Tough

Kia, Korean Junk that Americans Will Now Buy Because Gas Is Going Up... (I made that one up...).

etc.,

It actually is a factory registered trademarked slogan, although I can't recall when it was first used.

I recall it was used about 35 years ago. I'd have to do a little digging to figure out if it was used prior to that.

I believe it began with a series of magazine ads for the redsigned 1974 models ... the ads featured various combinations of 914s and 911s grouped with 914-6GT, 908, and 917 race cars, both endurance and Can-Am. Some shots were very low angles, others were taken from a cherry-picker or high grandstand. One notable shot was a low-angle, frontal shot of a 917/10, 914, and 911 ... it must have been taken very early in the day as the lighting cast was distinctly bluish, and wide-angle lens distortion was visible.

I had this plate when I had an '02 C4S. Man I miss that car (without mufflers, with tequipment roll bar and Schroth harnesses)...

BUT

You also can't beat an early light air cooled classic, SSIs are next for this baby...
