Question Simple clutch adjustment question

If you want your clutch on the original 901 transmission to be tighter I.E. mine slips if I give it serious gas at rpm or when I shift when aggressive with revs the flywheel will spin indepentent of rpm with my foot fully off the clutch pedal. Would you tighten the adjusting nuts (the arm would move forward towards the front of the car) at the transmission?

Maybe a simple question, but back up a little. How old is your cable and how many miles on the clutch? I would suggest you loosen the cable and adjust it to the factory free play setting first. If the problem still exists, then replace the cable and adjust again. It could be just a cable or it could be the clutch is worn out. Start with the simple procedures first and progressively make a better diagnosis by eliminating the possibilities one at a time.

Sounds like a worn clutch disc to me; if the free play was set to 'tight' it would eventually slacken and not effect the clutching of the disc at all. Keep in mind the clutch does not fully engage when properly adjusted until the last one-third of pedal travel. I'd start putting together a shopping list of a clutch kit plus whatever 'while you're in there' items you may have been considering.

Regards,

Sounds like a worn dlutch to me also.

That said you should adjust the cable with somewhat too much free play (yet still releases when you fully depress the pedal). Will it slip under these conditions?

No free play can act like you have your foot on the pedal and slightly depressing the clutch.

I assume you have a 2.0 clutch on the 2.2E engine. That will make it far less expensive to have everything there new. If it is the clutch, you will have an easy DIY fix. We can lead you through all the details.

How well does the CIS accept the “E” cams or do you have CIS cams?

Best,
Grady

I don't believe I have any freeplay. I think the clutch is still partially engaged. I need to know which direction would be to give it some freeplay. I am REALLY new to this car and I could be wrong but everything about this car was out of adjustment or done wrong by the rebuilder and I believe, but cannot be sure because the rebuild seems to be done by clowns, that I have a fairly new clutch disc (less then 6k????).

Grady,
I will say if indeed I have the OEM "E" camshaft that it works very well with CIS. The reason I say "if" is I didn't have the rebuild done. The clown I got the car from, who was supposed to be reputable, but doesn't actually know a damn thing about the car he sold me. Basically everything he told me so far has been incorrect. He said it had a high lift cam which would mean the rebuilder didn't cut a corner, which the rest of the car doesn't show that quality, so I draw the conclusion that it has the stock "E" cam and was tuned badly thats why it had the high lift cam sound when I bought it. Now the car is tuned a bit better, by me, the car is running superb and quieter for having Dansk sport exhaust. Don't take it as fact, cuz at this point I'm am uncertain of the source of some parts, but running wise this car is VERY powerful, through the entire powerband. Actually to be honest it is a bit too much for street use. It may sound like bragging but I have very little else to be proud of except the fact this car will out run almost anything. As for which clutch I have, ???????????, it is a Frankenstein car, it appears to be the original 912's 901 transmission and clutch assembly connected to a '70 911E motor. I am forced to fly solo and blind on repairs because this car is from so many sources. If it was done a bit more carefully this car would have been a real gem but it is still a diamond in the rough.
